Luis’ Three Picks For the Weekend

May 7, 2010 Features, Gigs No Comments

Hello weekend, I missed you.

It’s Friday morning and I’m already looking at the clock wondering why nobody has invented a time machine yet. I promise I wouldn’t use it for evil – well, maybe I’d have a Bill & Ted style adventure, but mostly just to skip the weekdays.

Friday, May 7 – Soulphonics & Ruby Velle @ Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge
It’s no secret, I love the Soulphonics & Ruby Velle. 60′s soul music, wicked horn section, the amazing Ms. Ruby Velle. What’s not to love? They are so good that I don’t think I need “car-salesman” this one. I should warn you though, their last show sold out pretty quickly, so get there early for a guaranteed good time. Doors at 8:30. Music at 10 p.m.  Tickets $10 at the door. For more info: myspace.com/soulphonics and thehighlandinn.com

Saturday, May 8 – Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers @ The EARL
I first saw Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers opening for The Black Keys at the Variety Playhouse in 2005. The music was great and definitely caught my attention, but what sold me was frontman J.D Wilkes dancing around in lederhosen throwing cold cuts at the audience. I was sold the second I saw bologna fly high. The band has toured with the Reverend Horton Heat, The Black Keys, Robert Plant and Hank Williams III, and recently released their sixth studio album, Agridustrial. Go see this band and buy their record. Also bring sliced bread – it’s best to be prepared for flying deli meats.

Sunday, May 9 – The Moog, The Photo Atlas, The Debutaunts @ Drunken Unicorn
Sunday is Mothers Day, so if you can, go see your mom. Maybe make sure your clothes don’t reek of last night’s bar – moms don’t like that sort of thing. After you’ve enjoyed some quality time and maybe re-evaluated your life, come out to the Drunken Unicorn for a drink and some live music! Hungarian indie goth rock band The Moog are in town, and, well, how often can you say you’ve seen a band that fits that description? Indie-electro band The Photo Atlas and local Atlanta band The Debutaunts open.
