5GB With Truth & Salvage Co.; Playing Smith’s Olde Bar, Friday June 15th

[ 0 ] June 13, 2012 |

“How is it having four singers in the band?” is the question most asked of Truth & Salvage Co., often followed by “Where’s the group from again?” Though answers often vary depending on who you ask, the fact is that there would not be a Truth & Salvage Company without four singers; the band would have never come to be.   They quickly caught the attention of Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes) who signed the act to his label Silver Arrow Records, and produced the band’s self titled debut, released in May of 2010. Before the record was even released T&S was invited to support the The Black Crowes on tour for the better part of 2009, which greatly helped to spread their gospel. Rolling Stone magazine awarded their debut effort with a 3 and 1/2 star review, and USA Today touted the group as being one of the top up and coming acts to see. Countless other shining critical reviews have been bestowed upon them as well as numerous TV appearances including PBS Sun Studios Sessions and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live. They joined us for our 5GB series before their show on Friday at Smith’s Olde Bar.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Billy Joel Innocent Man Tour 1982. I was 7. me and my older borther wanted to go see Men at Work but my dad couldn’t tolerate “new wave” music at the time but wanted to be cool and take us to our first concert. Billy Joel I guess was the middle ground he thought a 7,11, and 34 year old could all stand on.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

There has been a thousand special moments onstage in my life, but it was really awesome to open for the Black Crowes at the Ryman Auditorium and have my Dad’s father, who gave me my first Hank Williams record, in the audience when we received a triple standing ovation.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I’d have to say the Afghan Whigs at the Metro in Chicago on the Black Love/1965 Tour was a life changing experience.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble. We almost got to do it. I’d trade any night at Madison Square Garden or Radio City Music Hall or anywhere else for that now.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich, Jackie Wilson and Otis Redding on Lead Vocals

Al Jackson Jr on Drums
James Jamerson, Phil Lynott, or Rick Danko on Bass (not at the same time)
Neil Young, Glen Campbell, and Keith Richards on Guitar (they could all play together)
Leon Russell and Floyd Cramer on Piano
Billy Preston and Ed Harsch on Organ

That’d be a pretty cool band.
