Win Tickets & 5GB With Richard Marx; Playing Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, Saturday July 14th

[ 2 ] July 9, 2012 | +

For over 20 years, Richard Marx has consistently and powerfully made his mark on the music industry. His debut single “Don’t Mean Nothing” and self-titled debut album kicked off his career as a solo artist in 1987 and went on to sell 3 million copies. From 1987 to 1990, he became the first male solo artist in history to have his first 7 singles reach the top 5 on Billboard’s singles chart, including the 1 hits “Hold On to the Nights,” “Satisfied” and the worldwide classic, “Right Here Waiting.” This feat remains unchallenged. Other hit songs include: “Don’t Mean Nothing,” “Should’ve Known Better,” “Endless Summer Nights” “Angelia,” “Keep Coming Back,” “Hazard,” “Now and Forever” & “Until I Find You Again. He joined us for our 5GB series. Enter below at the end of the interview to win a pair of tickets!

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I saw The Monkees in 1968. I was 5.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

That’s really hard to say. Thankfully, there are many choices that come to mind. From Radio City in 1990 to Poplar Creek Music Theater outside Chicago (where I grew up going to concerts as a kid) in ’94 to the Royal Albert Hall in London last year. And on and on. So many amazing audiences.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Again, very tough to say. The U2 show I saw in 2005 was maybe the best show I’ve ever seen. But last winter I saw The Civil Wars and they blew my mind.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

I’ve basically played all the “dream gigs” I ever wanted to. Now, it’s all about places I want to play. In the past 2 years alone, and for the first time, I played Russia, India, Bulgaria, Finland, and the Philippines, among a slew of other great spots around the world. I haven’t toured much in South America or Africa, so I’d like to get there.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

The past 2 years I’ve been playing primarily as a solo acoustic act. Just me and the audience. And it’s been the most rewarding experience of my career, and the greatest audiences ever. So despite the raging narcissism and selfishness attached to it, that’s my answer. My “dream” band, off the top of my head, would be Gavin Harrison on drums; Michael Landau on guitar; Marcus Miller on bass and Chuck Leavell on keys. But I’d have no business being in that band.
