AMG Weekend Picks: Sans Abri, Ava Luna, The Higher Choir and More!

[ 0 ] August 3, 2012 | +

Last night, we heard the news that one of our favorite BBQ joints, Fox Bros Bar-B-Q, was hit by a large tree during a pop-up heavy thunderstorm. We’re glad that everyone is safe and we wish the restaurant a speedy recovery! On that note, more rain and thunderstorms are predicted for this weekend, and while I’m not your weather girl, I do have tons of indoor concert options for ya.

We’d also like to give a Happy Birthday shout out to Garrett Hockin, our trusty bartender at Vinyl! Garrett is celebrating tonight, so pop into Vinyl and have a cold one! FREE SHOW!

Check out what’s happening around Atlanta:

Friday, August 3- Sans Abri with special guest, Ken Will Morton at Eddie’s Attic

Josh Erwin and Michael Paynter of The Packway Handle Band have started the side project, SANS ABRI, arranging original songs that don’t necessarily fit the band’s bluegrass bill. The songs are a creative collaboration involving acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, percussion, and vocal arrangements!

Friday, August 3- Ava Luna at The Earl

A band of three girls and three guys, exploring a sound that combines all the ideas of soul, punk, and modern pop!

Friday, August 3 – Papa Grows Funk at Smith’s Olde Bar

Booty shaking party music best sums up the inimitable Papa Grows Funk, one of the most successful funk bands to emanate from New Orleans.

Friday, August 3- Bert ‘Garrison’ Elliott at Steve’s Live Music

Elliott will lead a swingin’ band, intertwined with guest artists ranging from legendary singer-songwriters and musicians, to puppeteers, magicians, circus and vaudeville acts… and always a surprise or two!

Friday, August 3- Hawks w/ Buildings at The Basement at Graveyard Tavern

This is probably my favorite line that I’ve ever read about a band- “Hawks are a bunch of degenerate drunks obsessed with baseball and pizza rolls.” Enjoy!

Friday, August 3- United Sounds of Africa at Center-Stage

Featuring Tuface, MI, BRYMO, Jesse Jagz, J Martins, Timi Dakolo!

Saturday, August 4- The N.E.C. (record release) w/ Soft Opening at The Earl

Natural Extension Concept (The N.E.C.) reach the destination of their psychedelic voyage on their forthcoming LP, Last Point of Radiation. Also check out the Village Pass option and grain entry to the shows at 529.

Saturday- August 4- Order of the Owl w/ Spirits and the Melchizedek Children at 529

Fronted by Zoroaster’s Brent Anderson, the sound is decidedly metal, but drummer Corey Pallon’s classic rock influence and guitarist Casey Yarbrough’s driving progressive chords give new life to the usual detuned fare Atlanta’s grown so famous for. Also check out the Village Pass option and grain entry to the shows at The Earl.

Saturday, August 4- The Higher Choir w/ Like A Locomotive at Smith’s Olde Bar

Higher Choir is performing and celebrating their EP release.

Saturday, August 4- Jill Andrews with special guest, Robby Hecht at Eddie’s Attic

Andrews crafts beguiling, startlingly intimate songs that merge her voice with her effortless, classic-pop sensibility and keen eye for human drama—all the unspoken truths between lovers, devastating confessions whispered to friends, silent prayers offered up during the longest, loneliest nights.

Saturday, August 4- Young America at Vinyl

The members of the band have found a perfect harmony with one another, all of them working together towards one goal, never aiming to outshine their peers. .

Saturday & Sunday, July 4 & 5- Mindless Behavior at The Fox Theatre

These teen sensations sold out the Saturday show, but some seats are still available for Sunday night!

Sunday, August 5- Rachel Platten at 99x’s Unplugged in The Park at Park Tavern

The free weekly series will run every Sunday till Sep. 30. Visit www.99x.com for details
