This has been a decisive year for San Francisco’s the Fresh & Onlys – including invitations to play All Tomorrow’s Parties and then they joined Deerhunter for a UK tour, extensive treks throughout the US, and standout performances at the Woodsist festivals in NY and Big Sur. They joined us for our 5GN series before their show tonight at 529.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
My first club show was Teenage Fanclub and Afghan Whigs at the Club Detroit in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was Fanclub’s Bandwagonesque tour and they seemed absolutely magical to me. I thought I was King Shit because I won tickets on the radio. I wore my coolest flannel.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
That’s always tough because it’s probably different for everyone in the band. I do know we were all stoked and hi-fiving each other back stage at a show we played in London with Deerhunter a few years ago. We were limping through these shows with them in England and that night we finally pulled it together. And they were absolutely amazing as well. A very high spirited night.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
I saw Antony and the Johnsons in 2005 at an old church in Rotterdam. I was under Antony’s spell pretty heavily at the time and he floored me. I felt like I was levitating at one point. To see someone with that much magic swirling around them is pretty overwhelming.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
Time travel would be necessary. That footage of X from Decline of the Western Civilization looked pretty damn fun. I’d have a long list actually.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Beat Happening on at 9:00
Germs on at 10:30
Smoke on at 10:45
Catch The Fresh and Onlys, Nov. 5th at 529
