ADVENTŪS is the Latin word for arrival. And so Cody Canada and The Departed emerge with their first original album. Upon the disbanding of Cross Canadian Ragweed, The Departed took root; Cody Canada and his long time Ragweed band mate, Jeremy Plato on bass and vocals, with Seth James on guitar and vocals (Seth James Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard), Steve Littleton on B3 organ and keys (Live Oak Decline, Stoney LaRue & the Arsenals, Medicine Show) and Chris Doege on drums (Seth James Band, Nashville touring acts). The band members had spoken reverentially of each other’s musicianship before getting together almost two years ago. But make no mistake; Adventūs is anything but a relic of the past. It rocks hard, it burns in the Southern sun, and it represents a new era of creative growth, tapping into the eternal emotions and sonics that have informed the great American musical styles from the start.

We caught up with Cody Canada and Seth from Cody Canada and The Departed before their show at Peachtree Tavern this Friday, March 8th.

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you? or at your show?
Cody: A man once asked if he could get our license plate number so he could follow us. The entire time he was asking were where standing next to the plates. Then there was the guy that asked me to sign his bulldogs balls.
Seth: A lady followed me into the men’s bathroom and had a conversation with me while I sat on the toilet.

Cody: Once in west Texas some dude through full three liter bottle of 7-up 50yards across a crowd. The loudest drunkest guy in the crowd was looking right at me having a blast then the bottle hit him like a bomb dropped from the sky. Knocked him cold for about 2 minutes then he raised back up and drank more beer.
Seth: It’s always fun to get a possum from a taxidermist.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Cody: Music,beers and a prayer
Seth: No rituals really, a prayer before the stage

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?
Cody: There’s so many different influences in our music. I’ll say honest.
Seth: Real

How do you connect with a crowd?
Cody: Talk to them. Let them know you care. If you connect with the crowd you’ve got a good night. Happy crowd happy band.
Seth: Through the ear drum.

What bands would be part of your dream lineup?
Cody: Shinyribs,Reckless Kelly,REK.
Seth: Anders Osborne, Shiny Ribs, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely, Pearl Jam, Reckless Kelly

What is the best way to write music?
Cody: Driving in the hill country really gets it going for me. Windows down and radio off.
Seth: Your Way.
