Tony Toni Tone featuring Whodini, Silk, Chubb Rock, & J.J. Williamson- May 4

Brothers Dwayne and Raphael Wiggins and cousin Timothy Christian have proven themselves durable guardians of the soul and funk tradition, while also infusing their music with enough contemporary devices to remain popular. This Oakland trio scored a number one R&B hit right out of the box in 1988 with “Little Walter,” a song that generated some criticism from gospel audiences for its use of the melody from “Wade in the Water.” But they’ve since been able to keep things going on their own, as their LPs, The Revival in 1990 and Sons of Soul in 1993, have also been enormously successful. Tony! Toni! Toné! released their fourth album, House of Music, in the fall of 1996.

Mint Condition featuring Slick Rick, Carl Thomas, Nappy Roots, & Griff- June 1

Mint Condition does it all—delivering hard-bitten funk with a hip hop edge, rocking out with screaming lead guitar, and crooning lush, “baby-making” soul ballads. Mint Condition stands along with The Roots as the only high-profile examples of a self-contained, hit-making Black music band, and with Mint’s emphasis on songs and great singing, the sole band carrying on the great tradition of R&B funk bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire, The Meters, War, The Commodores, Lakeside, Slave and many more that were an important, progressive element of the black music scene in the Seventies and Eighties.

K-Ci & Jo Jo featuring Dru Hill, Big Daddy Kane, Kut Close, & Rodney Perry- August 3

Brothers K-Ci & JoJo—Cedric and Joel Hailey, respectively—began their careers in music during childhood as members of their father’s gospel group, Little Cedric and The Hailey Singers, in North Carolina. In the early stages of their career, The Haileys collaborated with 2Pac (Tupac Shakur) on the song “How Do U Want It”/”California Love,” which was later nominated for a Grammy Award. K-Ci & JoJo, along with Babyface and two of his brothers from the R&B act After 7, recorded “I Care ’Bout You” for the Soul Food soundtrack in 1997. You won’t want to miss this R&B duo!

Avant featuring Jagged Edge, Rob Base, Case, and Doo Doo Brown- September 7

As fads come and go, it’s nice to know that some things never go out of style. Case in point: power-packed R&B as delivered by soulful singer/songwriter Avant. A versatile singer, Avant has recorded with a diverse range of artists, including Lil Wayne and contemporary jazz multi-instrumentalist Brian Culbertson. The latter pairing resulted in the top 15 R&B hit “Skies Wide Open.” Avant was also among a select group of singers chosen to pay homage to R&B legend Frankie Beverly on Silky Soul Music … An All-Star Tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.
