5 GB With Tapes N’ Tapes; Playing The Earl Tonight

By Eileen Tilson

Almost on a weekly basis, I hear musicians say “if I only had a publicist, I could make it.” The thought process being that if someone else pitched to an editor or blogger about how great their band is, they would have greater results. Minnesota’s Tapes n’ Tapes decided to take a different approach. Knowing they could describe their music the best, they sent their own info to the likes of mega-blogs Pitchfork and Gorilla vs. Bear, and the sites featured the music. Having played with and compared to some of the coolest indie bands in the biz, Tapes n Tapes plays The Earl tonight. Frontman Josh Grier joined us for our 5GB series.

What is the the first gig you ever went to?

In 7th/8th grade my parents took my to see Beck during his Odelay tour. I remember being horribly sick, and honestly by the end of the concert I felt better. I guess that’s the power of music!

Best gig you have ever played/performed at?

We played Coachella back in 2007. It was super hot, but super fun, and Danny DeVito was there and told us that he liked our band!

Best gig you’ve ever been to?

Oh Prince for sure. I have seen him twice. He played this show on 07-07-07, where he actually played three different shows; it was incredible, even Sheila E was there.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

We have been pretty lucky to play a lot of pretty great festivals, but we have yet to play Glastonbury, which would obviously be amazing. We have played Red Rocks though, which is pretty much perfect!

If you could put your dream lineup on a gig, who would it be?

First you would need the original lineup from Guns n’ Roses, then of course Radiohead, and then you would have to throw some Buddy Miles in with the bunch.
