5GB Interview with The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Playing @ The Earl Tonight

Nataworry

On stage and in the studio, Jon Spencer has destroyed and rebuilt American roots music with such ferocity and wild abandon, that it’s hard to believe there is anything left. It’s been twenty years since The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion first pressed ‘record’, and twenty years since Spencer and his A-Team of sonic terrorists tore up the indie-rock landscape with fever and a visceral, untouchable vision of rock’n’roll that did for a new wave of blues-punk primitivists what Helen of Troy’s face did for the armada. See The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion tonight at The Earl!

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Maybe Beatlemania? My older sister took me. The early gigs that made a difference for me were my first hardcore shows. Not my most favorite music but very empowering!

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

The Blues Explosion has had some very, very nice shows recently. Our December tour in Europe seemed to hit a new high every night.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Hard to say. Link Wray in ’84? Kraftwerk in ’98? Maybe all the Jesus Lizard shows I saw when we opened for them in ’92?

Gig you would most like to play?

The ones that pay a lot of money. Ha!

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Baby, I got my dream line up. Come see it at the Earl.

Catch The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Tonight (Friday) at The Earl.
