5GB w/ The Joy Formidable; Playing Music Midtown, 9/24

By Eileen Tilson

One of the most buzzed about bands at Music Midtown this year, The Joy Formidable was conceived by music-obsessed friends Ritzy Bryan and Rhyddian Dafydd when they were both students in Wales. With rampant success in the U.K., the band came into the U.S. with a bang, playing sold out shows in NYC with Passion Pit. With their hit song “Whirring” racing up the charts, this will definitely be a show not to be missed. We chatted with frontwoman, Ritzy Bryan, as part of our 5GB series.

What is the the first gig you ever went to?

Elvis Costello and the Attractions at Liverpool Royal Court.

Best gig you have ever played/performed at?

Opening for Sir Paul McCartney at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was pretty special.

Best gig you’ve ever been to?

Bjork at Manchester Apollo.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

We had a lot of fun at SXSW this year, it’s a great festival if you don’t let the chaos get to you. Be great to go back and soak it all in, without doing 200 shows in 3 days!

If you could put your dream lineup on a gig, who would it be?

Be great to run into the Boss, Mr Bruce Springsteen, along with Trail of Dead and Miss Patti Smith.
