5GB With Brendan James; Playing Vinyl, Sept. 19th

Brendan James’ third album, Hope In Transition, marks a shift from blind ambition to a new optimism. After a transformative summer and some serious soul-searching, the LA-based singer-songwriter had a creative rebirth. During this formative time he played over 300 shows, building a robust fanbase touring with such diverse artists as John Mayer, Paula Cole, Keb Mo, Parachute, and Matt White. James garnered widespread exposure through his songs being featured on television shows such as “Private Practice,” “American Idol,” “Bones,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Army Wives,” and “One Tree Hill.” He also made TV appearances on “Rachael Ray” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” Both Brendan James albums climbed the iTunes Top 10 pop charts—James’ sophomore album, Brendan James, climbed to #1 on the iTunes singer-songwriter charts. He joined us for our 5GB series before his show tonight at Vinyl.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I used to go to town festivals and folk shows with my mom.. I can remember seeing Livingston Taylor when I was very young.. I loved how he whistled between verses.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Hmm, I’ve played hundreds of shows that I could consider my favorites at this point.. so hard to say. But if I had to choose just one, I might say playing the main deck of the Mayer Craft cruise, as 2,000 of us embarked, drink in hand, for Mexico.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Either James Taylor live in DC, or Elton at the Garden.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

A dream gig for me would be on the same bill as Paul Simon, David Byrne, and Ray Lamontagne, with special guest Regina Spector, all taking place outdoors.. maybe at Redrocks or something, or on the moon.
