Atlanta’s Carnivores have been keeping busy all summer, wrapping up their third LP, Second Impulse, as well as snagging some coveted slots on the West Coast opening for Franz Ferdinand.

The forthcoming LP promises to be their best, most mature and cohesive bout yet. But being the hardworking group they’ve proved themselves to be from the get-go, the Carnivores crew hasn’t been idle in the meantime. They’ve hardly had a break in shows, whether local or out of town, and tonight they’ll support San Francisco’s the Fresh & Onlys at 529.

Read bassist Philip Frobos and guitarist Ross Politi’s responses to the 5GB series below (complete with emoticons—this was via email), then check out their latest tune, “Black Canvas,” here.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Philip Frobos: The first show I ever attended was The Who at Phillips Arena, it was right before John Entwistle died too! Still have the T-shirt.

RP: My first gig was little Anthony and the Imperials hosted by Wolf Man Jack in Orlando, Fla., circa late ‘80s.  :p

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

PF: Probably the best show we’ve ever played was the show was…our San Diego show with Franz Ferdinand. Before, after, in the midst.

RP: My fav gig was playing in Paris with our friend doing improv sax over half the set.  Someone recorded it but we never got a copy.  🙁

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

PF: The best show I’ve ever witnessed was prolly performed by the Black Lips at some point.

RP: The best gig I have ever seen was probably the Ramones on their last tour. They played everything very fast and a guy danced in back of Joey [with] his pants down. :p

What is the gig you would most like to play?

PF: I would like to go back and play with Orange Juice or Josef K somewhere in Glasgow.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

PF: Dream line up: Birthday Party, Velvet Underground, The Cramps, The Zombies, Echo & the Bunnymen.

RP: The gig I would most like to play/”dreamgig” would be to have Carnivores open for the Motley Crüe “Too Fast for Love Tour,” featuring the “Diceman” as their frontman and Woody Allen playing clarinet interludes between songs. 🙂 :$

Carnivores play 529 tonight with Quilt and the Fresh & Onlys.
