5GB With Order Of The Owl; Playing 529 August 4th

With a backstory as epic as their name, Order of the Owl brings some of Atlanta’s most die-hard musicians together in one growling beast of a band. Fronted by Zoroaster’s Brent Anderson, the sound is decidedly metal, but drummer Corey Pallon’s classic rock influence and guitarist Casey Yarbrough’s driving progressive chords give new life to the usual detuned fare Atlanta’s grown so famous for. Here they are before their show at the 529.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

My first real show was one my older sister took me to. It was at Lakewood in 1987 and it was Blondie and The Ramones. I’ll never forget that one. I still have the Eacape From New York Ramones T-Shirt. They were about my favorite band from 13 up.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Order of the Owl did an amazing tour with Sourvein this past spring. We played a capacity crowd with them in Brooklyn at The Acheron. Had a lot of good friends there, met the amazing artist David Cook at his art show earlier in the day too. Just hands down the most fun we’ve had.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

onestly that’s a hard one to decide. Seen a lot of great bands over the years of all styles. Back in the early nineties I got to see Melvin’s play with Primus, and another show a lot of years later where Melvins played with Big Business. Those were both a blast of a show! Saw Ramones and Social Distortion back in the early ninetied too. An old place called The International Ballroom. Show was just absolutely nuts. I got permanent hearing damage from that one. Never forget that! I went to Riotfest a few years back and got to see one of my favorite bands The Murder City Devils reunion. They absolutely killed it. Crowd ate it up, and they played everything I wanted to hear. Seeing Archers of Loaf at The Earl on their last tour was pretty great. Started the set off with Audio Whore. Just amazing. I saw Fugazi on their last tour in Asheville years ago. They played for hours in a sweltering room. Non stop, just kept belting out the songs. At the end of the show Ian Mackaye saw my friend with a broken arm in a sling, stopped and asked if anyone had hurt her and if she was ok. Pretty bad ass. Every JTB show I saw was killer.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

I’d like to maybe get on a larger scale fest like Scion Fest. Play with some legends! That would definitely be fun.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

I’d definitely like to open for The Murder City Devils before they hang it up again. Sourvein has been so good to us, it’d be fun to have them on the bill too. Big Business is a favorite, and I’m a huge fan of what Royal Thunder is doing. That would really round it out for me.
