5GB With Sister Crayon; Playing 529 Tonight, April 29th

Sacramento quartet, Sister Crayon have made a name for themselves with their atmospheric melodies and dreamy lyrics. Their latest album, Bellow was released last year on  Manimal Vinyl Records,  and the band is touring nationally in support. Lead singer, Terra Lopez joined us for our 5GB series before their show tonight at the 529.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

The first concert I ever went to, or at least from what I can remember was a Fiona Apple concert back in ’99. It was the “When the Pawn” tour and I had just turned 15. It blew my mind. She was like nothing I had ever seen or heard before. I think that was when things really opened up for me-I was inspired ever since.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

That’s a tough one. We have played some great shows. A show that stood out for me was when we played SF Pride Festival last summer. There were thousands of people who were so into the show and just to be able to be a part of something that we truly believe in was incredible.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I would have to say there is a three way tie between Sigur Ros at the Greek Theatre, Portishead at Coachella a few years back, and Jon Brion & Fiona Apple at Largo years ago. All three performances have stuck with me and were “life-changing”, to say the least.

Gig you would most like to play?

I think to play Coachella would be an amazing thing, of course. I think it’s the huge festival that you kind of always hope to one day play.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

This is tough one. Dead or alive artists? My perfect dream bill for current day would be Portishead, Radiohead, Bjork, and us. And my perfect dream bill for past artists would be a night of my favorite vocalists: Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, and us, I guess.
