5GB With The Spring Standards; Playing Smith’s Olde Bar, Sept. 25th

Three-piece indie folk rockers, The Spring Standards don’t apoogize for being a Brooklyn-sounding band, they embrace it. They released their first EP ‘No One Will Know’ in July 2008 which was co-produced by Rhett Miller of Old 97s and engineered by Kieran Kelly of The Buddy Project.  They recently released their latest album back in May, and joined us for our 5GB series before their show at Smith’s Olde bar.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

My first show ever was Alanis Morissette – my mom let me buy a t-shirt that said “chicken shit” on it, which was a pretty big deal to a 12 year old.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

We played the Ann Arbor Folk Festival last year and got to perform the final encore (Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’) with a staggeringly awesome group of musicians – Glen Hansard, Susan Werner, John Gorka, Eliza Gilkinson – we were surrounded by folk legends singing Dylan to an audience of 3,500 people. It was magical.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

It’s really hard for me to choose favorites, and impossible for me to compare certain performers to others. So I’m gonna cop out a little bit here and say that the best gig I saw this summer was Dirty Projectors and Wye Oak at the Prospect Park Bandshell.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

Newport Folk Festival.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

All I know is Hall & Oates would headline and I would sit in on saxophone (which I would have to learn beforehand, obviously). The rest is just icing on the cake.
