AMG Weekend Picks: Matt Wertz, Macklemore & More!

Matt-Wertz

This is like your last tryptophan-free weekend of the year so you better do it up right. There’s plenty of opportunities for fun with a no longer M.I.A. Matt Wertz, a classical violinist with an Atlanta attitude, an epic open mic night at Eddie’s Attic and more.

Friday, November 22 – Matt Wertz @ Vinyl

Matt Wertz is excused. Yes, it has been three years since his last full-length release, but when you take his relentless touring schedule, a breakup with his major label, a new deal with Nettwerk and the trials and tribulations of life into account, the ever-so-charming singer/songwriter gets a pass. In fact, it’s these experiences that have helped shaped the inspired songs on Wertz’s new album, WEIGHTS & WINGS, and by that rationale, it was worth every bit of the wait. Doors at 7pm. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 on the day of the show.

Friday, November 22 – Bobby Yang @ Eddie’s Attic

Melding his classical training with years of Colorado mountain woodshedding, Bobby Yang is reinventing the sound of the acoustic violin. His inimitable sound combines the virtuosity of the violin with the dirt of a bluegrass fiddle and the rawness of a guitar. He has surrounded himself with musicians who share his madness, his Unrivaled Players, while touring internationally. Doors at 6:30pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and $16 on the day of the show.

Saturday, November 23 – Swamp Dogg @ The Earl

Raunchy, satirical, political, and profane, Swamp Dogg is one of the great cult figures of 20th century American music. In sheer musical terms, Swamp Dogg is pure Southern soul, anchored on tight grooves and accentuated by horns, but the Dogg is as much about message as music. Williams incorporated all the mind-bending psychedelic ideas of ’60s counterculture — drugs, sex, radical politics, social politics — into the framework of deep soul, establishing his blueprint in the 1970s then spinning out variations over the next several decades, never making hits but earning a rabid cult following and raking in royalties through his behind-the-scenes work. Doors at 9pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 on the day of the show.
