AMG Weekend Picks! Tyler Ward, Duquette Johnston, Marc Broussard, The Happenstance, and more!!

By: Shelby Lum

Alright Atlanta!  This weekend is packed full.  We don’t just have your usual concert filled weekend, but festivals, battle of the bands, and week number two of Winter Wonder Jam.  So unwind from your stressful holiday shopping with some live music…that is if you have started your holiday shopping.  If you haven’t started, well these are just a few more reasons to put it off for a day or two more.  Concerts and one of the most unique battle of the bands will win over traffic at the mall any day!  Here are our weekend picks for you!

Friday, December 7th-Tyler Ward at Vinyl

Starting off as a YouTube sensation, to a touring artist, Tyler Ward has skyrocketed in public appearances.  He is most known for his cover songs by popular artists from Adele and Jason Mraz to Justin Bieber.  Join Tyler Ward at Vinyl for his spins on popular songs.

Friday, December 7th-Duquette Johnston with Tedo Stone at The EARL

Duquette Johnston has shared the stage with names like The Strokes and The Foo Fighters.  That’s right, he has been on stage with Dave Grohl.  I can’t think of a higher accolade for a rock musician than that.  Johnston will be at The EARL this weekend, so be ready to see one of the next big things coming to town.

Friday, December 7th-Everybody Run Record Release with A Fight For Life and Native Suns at The Basement at Graveyard Tavern

Everybody Run will be having a release party for their newest album, Let’s Go, before they kick off their 2013 tour.  Support this Atlanta quartet before they hit the road.

Friday, December 7th-Heather Luttrell at Steve’s Live Music

For a more low-key night, music scene veteran Heather Luttrell will continue on with over a decade of performances under her belt.  She calls her acoustic music homegrown and not manufactured.  Head out to Steve’s Live Music to hear her bluesy music.

Friday, December 7th-The Tom Petty Show at Smiths Olde Bar

If you need your 80s fix for the weekend, The Tom Petty Show, will be ready with all your Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers favorites at Smiths Olde Bar.  Presented by the Sundogs, the band will open with a few of their original tracks, and then move onwards to the best of Tom Petty.

Saturday, December 8th-An Evening with Larkin Poe at Eddie’s Attic

The sister duo may be young but they pack their sets full of nearly every genre.  They range from singer songwriter, to folk, to acoustic R&B, to jam band all in one night.   The sisters have taken the stage at Bonnaroo to the Grand Ole Opry.  Having generated a substantial following in Europe while opening for Elvis Costello, Larkin Poe is now back in the states to generate a following in their home state.  Check out these ladies for their performance at Eddie’s Attic this weekend.

Saturday, December 8th-Highjacking Music Festival at 529

If you are looking for a quiet day, you may need to steer clear from 529 all day on Saturday.  Beginning at 3, Highjacking Music Festival begins and they have brought in acts from your local Atlanta music scene as well as around the southeast.  From rock to progressive to electronic names, 529 will be a far cry from quiet.  Presale tickets are just $10 meaning each act is just priced a just a dollar.  You probably can’t beat that price any where else!

Saturday, December 8th-Rahbi with Roman GianArthur & Eryn Woods at The Basement at Graveyard Tavern

For something a little different, Rahbi, the glam soul artist will be at The Basement.  Joining him will be Roman GianArthur, Eryn Woods, Vina Mills, Richelle Brown, and Bowe Inc for a night full of performers.

Saturday, December 8th-The Happenstance at The EARL

This is a battle of the bands flipped completely around.  Rather than your usual bands who practice for months on end to win the coveted spot, The Happenstance is a Battle of Hastily Assembled Bands, meaning none of the 30 musicians will known each other prior to this Saturday morning.  With one day to make a 20 minute set to perform that night, The Happenstance will be the most interesting battle of the bands you have seen in awhile.

Saturday, December 8th-Winter Wonder Jam feat. Marc Broussard with special guests at Atlantic Station

This is week two of Winter Wonder Jam, and if last weekend was any indicator of what Winter Wonder Jam is to hold, things can only be getting better!  Saturday will feature Marc Broussard.  His “bayou soul” mixes funk, blues, R & B, and of course he mixes in all his southern influences.  Don’t miss Winter Wonder Jam!

Saturday, December 8th-X-Mix with The District Attorneys at Smiths Olde Bar

The District Attorneys will be helping out Mix Tape Atlanta’s annual holiday bash at Smiths Olde Bar.  This Shins sounding band will be joined by other acts for a night full of new music.

Sunday, December 9th-Jenny & Tyler at Eddie’s Attic

The acoustic duo will be hitting Eddie’s Attic with their assortment of acoustic instruments.  Guitars, mandolins, and a kick drum made out of a suitcase will be lining the stage.

Sunday, December 9th-Mike Zito at Smiths Olde Bar

With the help of Grammy winning producer, Anders Osborne, Mike Zito has combined his bluesy sound with his Texas roots.  Check him out at Smiths Olde Bar to wrap up your weekend!
