Boys Like Girls

Boys Like Girls

By Kim Burdges

If you are looking to relive your high school glory days, no need to search for a time machine just pick up a copy of Boys Like Girls. This surprising debut not only encompasses the carefree uncertainty of the teenage lifestyle, but it showcases an impressive musical style with great complimentary lyrics.

“The Great Escape”, “Five Minutes to Midnight”, and “On Top of the World” perfectly encapsulate the restlessness and invincibility most of us associate with our teenage years. Boys Like Girls’ lead singer Martin Johnson wrote all of the album’s songs and truthfully expresses their emotions through the album as well as during live performances.

Although Johnson shines in enveloping the urgency and restless state of the teenage soul, he also keenly hits on love’s addictive nature. “Hero/ Heroine” poignantly captures the push/pull effects of heartbreak with a traveling beat and lines like “I keep a sinister simile and a hole in my heart/ You wanna get inside/ Then you can get in line.” “Thunder” provides one of the album’s catchiest tracks, including the lyrics: “Your voice was the soundtrack of my summer/…I don’t wanna ever love another/ You’ll always be my thunder/ So bring on the rain/ And bring on the thunder.” The forceful power pop piece “Up Against the Wall” seems to be a continuation of “Thunder” with bitter stabs at love and failed attempts to bounce back: “Just let it go/ But the weather’s been better/ Don’t let it be another breakdown/ Rebound/ This could be my last goodbye.”

Another album standout is “Heels Over Head,” which Johnson marries a great dance hit with equally captivating lyrics; “I got a first class ticket to a night alone/ And a front row seat up right by the phone/ ‘Cause you’re always on my mind/ And I’m running out of time.”

This summer Boys Like Girls joined Hellogoodbye for the The Two Months of Spring Break Tour ’99! and wooed sold out crowds with their electric live shows. Boys Like Girls are now headlining their own tour. Be sure to catch this soon-to-be-household group at The Roxy Theatre October 11th.
