Out Of Nothing
Lava/Atlantic Records
By Michelle Gilzenrat

After a four-year hiatus, Embrace return with the Britpop comeback of the year.

For most American listeners, it may seem that Embrace ’s “Out of Nothing” indeed came out of nowhere. But Anglophile connoisseurs are well aware that Embrace was in fact on the forefront of the post-Britpop movement. Debuting in 1998, several years before the likes of Coldplay or Keane , Embrace stunned audiences across the U.K. with sweeping, majestic balladry.

“Out of Nothing,” their fourth full-length record and first release in four years, is no exception. The record has already sold over half a million copies in England, and is quickly gaining momentum stateside. “Out of Nothing” also marks the first time Embrace have worked closely with someone else producing in over seven years. The band teamed up with Youth ( The Verve, Killing Joke, The Orb ) to create a dramatic and beautiful record. It’s hard not to picture a stadium aglow with lighters as each track soars in anthemetic glory.

If their first single, “Gravity” seems especially Coldplay -esque, that is because it was in fact penned by long-time Embrace friend and fan Chris Martin . Martin played lead vocalist Danny McNamara the song over the phone two years ago. “I told him it was an amazing song,” Danny said. “He agreed, but he thought it sounded too much like Embrace for Coldplay to use the song.” While McNamara was skeptical about using the track, Chris encouraged the idea, relating to the likes of Dylan and Graham Parsons who swapped songs and ideas in the ‘60s. “It’s not something that bands in the indie fraternity do,” brother and guitarist Richard McNamara adds, “But then we asked ourselves ‘Why shouldn’t we do this, just because no one lese does it? Let’s be the first.”

Atlanta fans can catch Embrace with fellow Brits Long-View on July 6 at The Loft , the venue quickly becoming the hot spot to catch import gems in Atlanta (think Kasabian, Ash, Delgados…). Get your tickets now from www.ticketalternative.com.
