The current incarnation of Sovus Radio have managed to make a lot of noise and turn a lot of industry heads in the city - and they're anything but boring, and anything but typical.
After only a few months with Ty Tomson as the band's new frontman, Sovus Radio was nominated for the '99X Best New Band' award at this year's Atlanta Music Guide Awards, and they earned the honor of being this year's winner at Open Mic Madness, following fellow locals Bain Mattox, The Whigs, and Avenge Vegas.
Sovus Radio's ability to craft memorable pop melodies have made them one of the city's most original acts. Songs like "The Announcer" are filled with dissonant chords, whimsical tempo changes, and a streak of precariousness. The band's psychadelic influences and eccentric performances are capturing crowds across Atlanta and earning the acclaim of 99X Music Director Jay Harren, who said that their live show "reminds me of why I love music."
There's something carefree yet dark about Sovus Radio's music. Persistent rhythms, pounding keyboards, and harmony-rich melodies are counterbalanced by an underlying neurosis. This combination is where the band's talent lies, keeping Sovus Radio refreshing and surprising.
As a result of winning Open Mic Madness, the band will receive 2 days of studio time in Nickel and Dime Recording Studios with Grammy winning producer Don McCollister and a slot on the 2006 Rock Boat. They hope to complete 2 full length albums next year as well.
Sovus Radio will be playing the "A Night to Rebuild" benefit for Habitat for Humanity October 29th at the Coca Cola Roxy. Check out their songs at www.myspace.com/sovusradio. |
