Although originally founded in 2002, the rockers in Variac have taken their time in cultivating a following. The band has only been playing live since early 2005, right after securing a slot on 99X & Miller Lite's "For Locals Only" compilation. However, the band's four members are no strangers to Atlanta's music scene.
Variac began as a studio project at the popular local Nickel & Dime Recording Studios with guitarists/engineers Kris Sampson, Ryan Pitchford, and bassist/studio manager Jim Pinkstone. The three then added drummer Tommy Tjoflat along with lead singer JT Hall in late 2004. Tjoflat played for the former local band Film, and Hall was previously the bassist for local acts like Butch Walker, Joe Stark, and Ryan McDougall.
The five piece creates morose yet infectious melodies that are increasingly evident in songs such as the title track off of their upcoming Fitted Phrase EP and "The Fool." The band's musical ability and resonant songs have created a spot for Variac in the local music scene as one of Atlanta's most promising upcoming bands.
Although Variac has played only a handful of live shows, there is already a strong buzz growing about the band. They will be releasing the Fitted Phrase EP at the 10 High on July 15th. Linger and The Julius Airwave are also on the bill. |
