Robinella
Solace for the Lonely
Dualtone
By Al Kaufman
There are moments on Solace for the Lonely, particularly the opening and closing tracks, when Robin Ella Contreras sounds like the reincarnation of Billie Holiday, if Billie had grown up on a farm and talked with a drawl; her voice exudes that much passion and range. On other cuts, such as “Little Boy,” Contreras opts for the white girl cool of a young Rickie Lee Jones. But for most of the cuts on this wonderful disc, the voice to which Contreras most resembles is that of the crystalline sound of Dido. Her voice demands your attention, even over the pleasant beats and pretty melodies held together by husband Cruz Contreras’s mandolin, piano, and guitar. Bruce Bouton’s pedal steel and Billy Contreras’s fiddle ensure that many of the jazzy melodies retain a certain amount of bluegrass twang. While the various musical stylings seem like they have the potential to be nothing more than a confused hodgepodge, Robin Ella’s alluring voice keeps it all together.
