The Redwalls
Coca Cola Roxy
by Angeline Vuong
While Atlanta was freezing and panicing over "Ice Storm 2005," I braved the not-so-lovely weather to catch The Redwalls open up for Keane and The Zutons' sold out show at the Roxy, and I'm quite glad I did.
From The Redwalls' first notes on stage playing their opening track "Colorful Revolution," teenage girls started screaming, flash bulbs were bursting, and boyfriends wore jealous smirks.
The Chicago-based four piece is undeniably a checklist of what every band needs to get girls swooning: a "The" band name; shaggy bed-ridden hair; boyish good looks; and most importantly, music that is retro & surprisingly soulful yet catchy. By the end of the night, most converted fans compared The Redwalls to an American version of early-era The Beatles. Though it's impossible for any band to come close to the mass appeal and originality of John, Paul, George, and Ringo - Andrew, Logan, Justin, and Ben do a great job at reviving that classic sound.
The Redwalls' guitarists/bassists Andrew Langer and brothers Justin and Logan Baren share the spotlight singing lead vocals for various songs, and it's remarkable how each of their voices are unique yet bear similar raspy, intense qualities that howl far beyond their young ages. On the band's debut disc Universal Blues (which was recorded in 2003 before they finished high school), their voices blend together so seamlessly that I was surprised three members shared lead vocals.
Everything seems to be coming together nicely for The Redwalls. With this opening slot on the VH1 Keane/Zutons tour (where many dates are sold out) and a record set for release this Summer on Capitol Records, these four young lads are determined to become your new favorite "The" band. The four piece has such a broad appeal that if the hipsters don't latch on to them first, then The OC watching, mall loving teenagers will.
