The Lost Boys Atlanta BandArt Thou Ready To Rock?! - The 5th year of Open Mic Madness kicked off at Smiths Olde Bar last night and the place was packed from the start. For those that don't know, 132 artsits/bands face off against one another - last band standing. Host and all-round nut job Josh Rifkind does a brilliant job of not only organizing, but hosting the weeklong event. Bands/Artists are matched up in pairs, head-to-head, one song each with the crowd voting on who goes through to the next round. There are also a panel of judges drinking Newcastle Brown Ale lending a hand. Last night's judges included National ASCAP Rep Jason Silverman, newly signed A&R Manager at Columbia Records Jay Harren, The EARLS Patrick Hill, producer Billy Hume and me (Iain) from AMG. Highlights from Monday night's round included songwriter Paul Warner, and Jil Station but the competition's early leaders have to be The Lost Boys. Dressed in kilts and clearly ready to entertain.. The Lost Boys took to the stage chanting "Art Thou Ready To Rock!!" to which the crowd responded enthusiastically before consuming even more mead then leaving the venue to rape and pillage. Imagine the men from the Capital One commercials, then add Samuel L. Jackson from the movie Formula 51 wearing a Kilt - Storm the castle!

The festival, organized by area record labels Eskimo Kiss Records, Goodnight Records, Numbers Station and Two Sheds Music, along with local music services company, Red Flag Entertainment, features bands from each of the labels' rosters and others representing the Atlanta scene. In scheduling this year's lineup, organizers opted not to include any bands that had performed in last year's festival. "We thought it would help add credibility, as our primary mission is to expose people to music they may not have the opportunity to hear otherwise," said organizer Kim Ware of Eskimo Kiss. "It just seemed like including the same bands from last year would defeat our purpose." The debut of the festival in 2005 featured an array of bands including Snowden , The Tom Collins , The Close , The Orphins and many others. As part of the festival, Ultrababyfat's show at The EARL will not only serve as a reunion (the band hasn't played live since 2002), but also the release show for their upcoming CD, "No Ringo No," to be released on Two Sheds Music.
