The Pizza Underground (featuring Macaulay Culkin) with La Femme, TV Dinner at Mammal Gallery

Over the last several days, the Internet has been fixated upon the Pizza Underground, a New York City band that plays Velvet Underground covers with pizza-themed song titles and lyrics. An initial hook to this pie-based news was that Macaulay Culkin plays kazoo and vocals. Little is known about the band, except that, according to their Bandcamp page, they recorded a nine-song demo at Culkin’s house last month with song titles like “Papa John Says,” “I’m Beginning to Eat the Slice” and “All the Pizza Parties.” Read more about the band here!

Noah Gundersen at Eddie’s Attic

Noah’s newest EP, called Family, pays homage to the people who have shaped his life–rather than the self-aggrandizing so common to the often homogeneous world of singer-songwriters.”Family comes in many forms,” says Noah. “It lives with us, for better and for worse. It shapes us. Thats what this album is about.” The songs on Family are consistently impressive and defy genre. Whereas roots-tinged songs like “Family” conjure up shades of a solo Ryan Adams, the sweeping and etherial “Fire,” bears similarities to the lush harmonic feats of Fleet Foxes. Perhaps the album’s standout track is the pulsating “David,” which combines the haunting darkness of Tom Waits with the lyrical angst of Neil Young. “The song is about who I want to be, while realizing who I am. I want to be less like my Father and more like my Dad.”

Noah will be playing 2 shows tonight! First show starts at 8 p.m. Doors at 6:30 p.m. Second show starts at 10 p.m.

Tickets: GA $10 in advance, $14 at the door. Table seats are $12.50 and must be purchased in multiples of 4. Online and phone sales close at 5 p.m.

Shearwater with Death Vessel & Jesca Hoop at The EARL

“Fellow Travelers wasn’t supposed to be a full-length record, so I’m a little surprised to admit that it’s my favorite Shearwater album so far. Somehow it slipped under the door.
It was meant to be a small thing, maybe a home-recorded EP, to release between Animal Joy and the next full-length (for which we’re in the studio right now). But it took on a life of its own. Re-imagining and renovating songs by the bands we’ve toured with was like leafing through a scrapbook, and brought back the highs and lows of a decade of touring, from dives in Oklahoma and squats in Slovenia to the Fillmore West, the Bataclan, and the MGM Grand.” – Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater

Liquor Store with Fletcher C. Johnson at 529

There is no band operating today that epitomizes those cornerstones upon which all great rock’n’roll is built, no band more ready to haul the half-dead carcass of American rock music upon its shoulders and carry it through the warzone that is 2013’s “music scene” than Northern New Jersey’s finest export, the mighty Liquor Store.
