Atlanta Music Guide Interviews Turf War!

Turf WarFormed as a bedroom recording project by singer/guitarist John Robinson in 2008, Turf War became a full band in mid-2009 and began to grow a local following in their hometown of Augusta, GA before moving to Atlanta.

Their style is gritty, Southern-tinged indie punk rock, with major influences from The Replacements, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, and 60 years of rock and roll.

2012 held for a major influx of live shows for Turf War, touring the southeast, midwest, and east coast, with festival stops at Fun Fun Fun Fest, Savannah Stopover, Governors Ball Music Festival, and Firefly Festival. They released the first single “Born To Run Free” off their new EP, The Great Escape, on April 2, 2013 via Converse and hit the road again.

Before they hit Atlanta, the guys took the time to answer some of our questions! Check it out!

How did you and your band mates meet?

Down at the crossroads.

How did you come up with your band name, Turf War?

It’s a political statement.

How does your new EP The Great Escape differ from your first album?

Everybody in the band switched instruments for the new album so essentially it is a completely different band playing Turf War songs. It sounds more professional. It’s a tighter record.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

Math.

If you could play a show with any musician / band, dead or alive, who would it be?

Dave Mathews Band. After he was dead.

What artists / bands have you been listening to lately?

State Champion, Hambones, Boorooracudas, Concord America and Rich Hands.

If you bought music today, what would you buy? A record, a CD or an MP3?

I’m not a crazy vinyl person but I would buy a record or MP3s. CDs are for the shooting range.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2013?

Myrtle beach vacation. Hangout with some beach buddies. Play some music at some festivals we can’t announce yet. Record more. Have some real good hangs with some bros.
