His 2012 self-titled debut album from Sony Music Nashville should blend those talents into a blues-soaked country sound all his own. “I’m a musician,” James shrugs, when asked to classify his creativity. “Not a guitar player, not a singer – I’m a musician.” And as sophomore single “Crying On A Suitcase” climbs the charts, the story behind his music makes more sense than ever: James has been prepping for this gig his entire life. He joined us for our 5GB before his show at the 120 Tavern & Music Hall.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Lynyrd Skynyrd

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

It’s hard for me to say that I loved one gig more than another. Music is my passion and my love. Every time I’m on stage it’s a very intimate and special thing for me. I love them all equally.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Much the same as playing music, listening to music is also a very intense experience for me. I learn something new from every show I watch as a fan and feel something different at each show. To say that I love one more than another one really wouldn’t be accurate or fair.

Gig you would most like to play?

Red Rocks. Something about Red Rocks is magical for me. To imagine a sold out crowd at that beautiful place always makes me smile. Maybe one day…

Catch Casey James at 120 Tavern & Music Hall.

He’s been crafting electro pop in Portland, OR for the past few years where the music community has been watching and waiting for this, his first full length album Mirror Gazer. Up til now there’s been a release on an Ape Tapes compliation and a video for the catchy “Ice Palace” replete with kaleidoscopic, melted visuals – directed by Andrew Sloan (Tender Loving Empire). He joined us for our 5GB series.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

When I was in first grade I went to a Kriss-Kross concert at this big arena. The stage was rotating, all I can remember is green lights and lots of smoke.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Over the summer while on tour with Tycho I played at Webster Hall, that was by far the best venue I’ve ever played in, the sound was incredible.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Seeing Ike Willis was pretty amazing. Lightning Bolt was pretty sick and this Diplo set during Seattle’s Capitol Hill festival was lots of fun.

Gig you would most like to play?

I would like to open for Oppenheimer analysis

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

ADR, RICK ROSS, OS MUTANTES, AND GHOSTFACE

Catch Onuinu at 529.

I have been living out of a suitcase for the past week, and I think my head is starting to spin! So, like any other crazed person, I am doing what’s best for me tonight and seeing some music of course, I hear it’s good for the soul. Here are some suggestions for tonight:

-It’s Songwriter’s Open Mic Night at Eddie’s Attic! Think you got what it takes? Head on down!

-Gotta love the free shows! Tonight at 529, catch Twins, Feast Of Violet, Brent Anderson, Chris Daresta, Walter Frobos, Ill Poacher, Brainworlds, John Hannah and Drew Haddon.

-Have you been to Elliot Street Pub yet? It’s pretty hipster, and yet awesome at the same time. Tonight they got some music for ya! Sounds From the Underground features jazz and experimental music, including 800 Giants, Darryl Reeves, Kenny Banks, Joel Powell, Kenton Bostick, and special guest Diggs Duke. Doubles as Joel Powell’s birthday bash.

His brand of folk-rock draws from the work of such Texas singer songwriters as Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith and Eric Taylor. Bicknell and his band, The Shameless Lovers, are currently at work on a fourth album, Shakedusting Lazarus. Bicknell’s brand of folk-rock draws from the work of such Texas singer songwriters as Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith and Eric Taylor.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

The first concert I ever saw was the Osmond Brothers at the Honolulu International Center. I was 12 years old.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Every performance has its own identity, and there have been so many incredible moments. It was a dream come true to open for Emmylou Harris, who is a big influence and whose albums have introduced me to so many other great songwriters. Another incredible experience was taking part in a writers-in-the-round concert at Eddie’s Attic with some of my favorite songwriters, Eric Taylor, David Olney and Denice Franke.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

It’s so hard to zero in on one performance. I’ve seen so many. Hearing Townes van Zandt at Blind Willie’s was life changing for me. Another performance that comes to mind was Rickie Lee Jones’ spellbinding performance at the Variety Playhouse.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’d love to perform on Late Night with David Letterman. I can dream, can’t I?

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

My band, the Shakedusters, on a double bill with Nanci Griffith and the Blue Moon Orchestra.

See Richard Bicknell at Eddie’s Attic, January 26th!

The quintet effortlessly combined an iconoclastic, irony-laced lyrical stance with a free-spirited eclecticism that encompassed a dizzying array of stylistic influences, from punk to folk to psychedelia to all manner of world music. Camper’s visionary embrace of disparate genres established them as innovators, while their songs’ combination of barbed satire and poignant humanism stymied those who’d attempt to pigeonhole them as a mere novelty. They joined me for our 5GB before their show.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Well, I’m gonna tell you about the first gig I didn’t attend. I was 11 and my family had moved to Tucson for a year (1975) and I didn’t have many new friends there, so I would wander downtown after school and vista the record stores. They turned my ears from the Beatles to much harder stuff, so I listened to the rock radio all the rest of the day. And they had tickets to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I called and won them!
The place they played was only about 10 blocks away, and I had two tickets… but my mom wouldn’t let me go. I had to give the tickets away. I have always wondered what it would have been like for a little long haired 11 year old kid.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

You know, this would get updated every tour. For me, playing the violin is a bit tougher to keep it together than playing guitar, so it changes every gig. When it all works, the tuning, tone, stage sound, band energy, audience energy, it is amazing. And it seems to have most, if not all, of these things at least every week.
That said, our last Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven (8th) annual Camp-Out Festival in Pioneertown last September was pretty high up there all around.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

This is by far the hardest of these questions, both due to the inconsistencies of memory and the fact that I’ve enjoyed an awful lot of shows! One that does come to mind is from back in the early 90s when Richard Thompson started playing solo. My friends and I went to Slim’s in San Francisco and got there (after a few beers elsewhere) to a crowded club. Somehow somebody grabbed us to fill in spots at a table (there were tables set up on the floor for this show, I guess because it was “acoustic”) and the table turned out to be right in the front and center. He came out and we were sitting directly in front of him, and we had not yet heard, for example, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” before. I remember actually crying by the end of the song. I’m getting goosebumps now, just writing about it.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’d love to play some of the really big festivals with Camper Van Beethoven, that’s something we haven’t done. In the US or the UK or Europe, either way, just to experience it.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

I’ve seen some Fillmore West posters that came close, gigs where you had Miles Davis and then Jefferson Airplane and Led Zeppelin, or something like that. I wish there were more gigs like that these days, with wildly disparate types of music.
I’d like to see one where Camper Van Beethoven plays with some amazing jazz ensemble, and maybe some Arabic band.
And then Radiohead on last.

See Camper Van Beethoven at The Earl, January 26th!
