You already know that Atlanta is home to a slew of hard-working bands who make our town one of the best places to catch a live show. Some of them have made the trek out to the South by Southwest music festival in Austin this year, and here are just a few that we’re happy to see representing Atlanta. This is by no means a complete list of all Atlanta artists playing during SXSW, but these shows could very well feature your neighbor, your favorite bartender, or that band who rehearses down the hall at your space. We know they’ll make us proud!

1. The Black Lips

These local garage and punk legends are playing a party with a purpose: the Syrian Red Cross benefit show entitled “Our Heart Aches for Syria.” They will perform following Syrian artist and cult international legend Omar Souleyman.

Date: Friday, March 15 at Long Center for Performing Arts

2. The Coathangers

The all-girl quartet will be sure to charm the Texans with their signature rauc n’ roll and charismatic live performance. They’ll need that energy to keep the party going for multiple shows–but we know they can bring it!

Dates: Wednesday, March 13 at Holy Mountain Backyard and Friday, March 15 at Easy Tiger

3. Gringo Star

Their upbeat pop music will keep toes tapping into the night, and new fans drawn in by their Beatle-inspired name will be happy to discover their vintage British Invasion sound.

Date: Saturday, March 16 at Red Eyed Fly

4. Entertainment

After playing “the death of music” throughout the drawing rooms and German cabarets of Atlanta, Entertainment headlines a showcase that features an entire roster of dark underground acts. Obvious tip: You won’t see these guys during the day.

Date: Saturday, March 16 at the Austin School of Film

5. Royal Thunder

Receiving nods from NPR and Brooklyn Vegan, Royal Thunder will play the Metal Sucks showcase–with a show that will most definitely will not. This dedicated four-piece crafts some jaw-dropping progressive rock and alternative metal. Really.

Dates: Thursday, March 14 at the Dirty Dog Bar and Saturday, March 16 at Red 7 Patio

On Tuesday, Adam Ant released his first album in 17 years – a collection of songs that are largely autobiographical in nature, with several nods to places and people he’s encountered along the road to pop stardom. After cutting his teeth at some of the UK’s toughest punk clubs, Adam’s first gigs gave way to a striking Top of the Pops appearance and the kind of fame that produced eight Top 40 singles in one week. He has been an inspiration to top fashion designers, voted the Sexiest Man Alive by MTV viewers, and still maintains a strong worldwide fan base.

With 17 tracks (one for each year away?), the new album presents like a disjointed diary. Listeners can eavesdrop on any given moment of Adam Ant’s strange days: his tragedies, fantasies, and comedies are all here.

The new material is quite different from the signature double rhythms and war-cries that Adam’s early Antmusic made famous. But make no mistake – he’s still pouty, provocative, and unpredictable.

The album’s first single, “Cool Zombie,” is a fond account of the years he spent in Tennessee as a small town’s resident rocker raising his daughter. It also recalls the eyes behind many of his early publicity shots and album covers — and a sharp contrast to the energetic, passionate live performer we recently witnessed at Atlanta’s Music Midtown festival just four months ago.

On the next track, each note of “Stay in the Game” floats out from an opiate haze as The Doors play shoegaze in the next room. Disguised as a simple melody, it could also be a profound declaration of the daily tightrope that must be walked by someone living with a mental illness. Other must-listens include the glam tribute, “Vince Taylor,” the driving electro-anthem, “Shrink,” and the infectious “Punkyoungirl.” Look for its lyrics to be hijacked by a middle-aged letch or music snob’s Twitter feed near you.

When Adam sings, “I bought you flowers to smooth things over…” and “a poor boy’s dreams are his only luxury,” revelations are laid bare. We know that he’s made some mistakes and broken a few hearts, but it sounds like the next chapter in the Book of Ant will feature a wiser warrior. The goody two shoes is dead, the cool zombie’s a mask, and we’re getting a glimpse of a stripped, honest soul. And that’s more punk rock than anything.

Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter will be released in a special vinyl version on February 4, 2013. Adam and his new band are currently working on a North American tour – watch for details at www.Adam-Ant.com and don’t miss him live!!!

How has Music Midtown changed over the last two decades? Are re-tweets from a band the new autographs? Do 52,000 people need more toilets than beer stands? One thing’s for sure: from year to year, what makes this Atlanta’s must-see festival is an amazing lineup.

O’ Brother kicked off the day with a guitar-heavy and vocally aggressive performance. Some tracks may have been a bit too experimental to appeal to the early afternoon crowd, but the band’s fan base is growing. Originally from Atlanta, they have gained international attention and will be playing the Soundwave music festival in Australia next year.

The next band to take the stage hailed from South Africa. Civil Twilight is a pop rock trio made up of two brothers, Steven and Andrew McKellar, and their longtime friend, Richard Wouters. The band’s soaring vocals and layered guitars filled the large stage and welcomed the first droves of music fans to Piedmont Park. After a quick stop in Atlanta, Civil Twilight rejoined their fall tour with MuteMath.

LP was up next, a powerful singer who also writes for top pop stars like Rihanna. Her own performance was instantly memorable with unique vocals and a more rocked-out version of her single, “Into the Wild.” She really charmed the audience and seemed equally happy to be in Atlanta, later tweeting: “Guys u are all amazing…thanks Atlanta!!!”

Another phenomenal female vocalist followed when Shirley Manson of Garbage came striding onto the Electric Ballroom Stage. The band launched into “I Think I’m Paranoid” and later “Queer” with Manson looking coolest of the cool behind her oversized shades. Garbage played Music Midtown back in 2002, and both the band and the festival were out to prove that they’re back and better than ever. After a playful jibe from Manson to audience members for paying more attention to mobile devices than the show (“We’re all multi-tasking!”), Garbage kicked out “Automatic Systematic Habit.” Though the band rose to fame in the 90′s, their dark electronic sound still sounds futuristic and got the crowd dancing.

One of Music Midtown’s (literal) feathers in their cap this year turned out to be the late addition of post-punk’s Prince Charming, Adam Ant. An iconic leader of the New Romantic music and fashion movement in Britain, Adam Ant is back on tour with a new band of dandies–The Good, The Bad, and The Lovely Posse. Adam’s vocals have been well-honed once again and he brought forth the hits with more attitude and polish than many of the younger acts in the lineup. Before Jack Sparrow there was Adam Ant, and he carried off enough punk pirate garb in the 80-degree heat to make Vivienne Westwood proud. The band’s unique double-drum rhythms and driving guitars soon had the field packed with curious and appreciative fans. Even the 11 and 12 year old boys next to me exclaimed, “these guys ROCK!” But don’t be entirely fooled by the fun, Adam Ant played some of the roughest punk clubs in London and he still maintains a bit of challenge in his eyes and the occasional sneer. Songs like “Kings of the Wild Frontier,” “Antmusic,” and “Stand and Deliver” had fans singing along and excited to hear the news that a new album will be released next year.

Ludacris kept the party going and humbly admitted how happy he was to be playing a festival in Atlanta, his hometown. The audience responded by waving and swaying along as Luda smoothly transitioned between his hits and a few samples from other artists. About halfway through his set, Ludacris announced that Music Midtown had officially sold out and that he was now singing to 52,000 people! On that note, I looked outside the gates to see even more Ludacris fans lining the sidewalks and dancing in the streets surrounding the park. As the crowd shuffled from beer tents to food trucks, I smiled to hear “Move B****” at such an appropriate moment.

Next, Neon Trees gave us a dose of upbeat alternative rock. Singer Tyler Glenn mentioned the year he was born in the first song, “1983,” but you had to listen closely to his quick, clipped speech. Was he an auctioneer in a past life? The band’s drum kit said “Fame is Dead,” but they don’t seem afraid to try and seek it out. Glenn even jumped into the pit to rub sweaty elbows with fans. Energy remained high on songs like “Everybody Talks” and “Animal” as the crowd seemed to gain their second wind, happily pogoing on the lawn.

It was a shame that Florence + The Machine seemed to experience the first technical difficulties of the day. Florence Welch’s voice is a precious instrument indeed, and she seemed a bit shaken when the band got off to a false start. After a few opening numbers, she seemed to relax and looked especially stunning in a pink and black floral Gucci gown. As she offered “Cosmic Love” and “Rabbit Heart” into the setting sun, a quiet reverence settled over the audience. Welch truly connects with the notes that she sings and uses the length of the entire stage to pose and express herself. Some of the most beautiful photographs of the day likely included her striking performance.

Girl Talk is DJ Gregg Michael Gillis mixing and mashing up hits from yesteryear and today. He had a crowd of kids dancing on stage and an impressive light show that made for an impromptu rave in the park. Vendors sold glowing trinkets and plenty of fans brought LED toys and neon hula hoops. The colorful show included something for everyone: Metallica mixed with Rihanna. Eminem with Adele. Tag Team with Teenage Wasteland. I’d call that one “The Who–There It Is!”

At 9PM all 52,000 concert-goers gathered for the festival’s headliners, Pearl Jam. Although the two-hour set was exceptional, fans sitting on different sides of the field mentioned spotty sound problems. The band first launched into “Why Go Home?” and later, “Better Man” had the whole crowd singing with vocalist Eddie Vedder. Next, we heard a PSA from Vedder asking us to vote in the Presidential election followed with “Know Your Rights” by The Clash. Pearl Jam even dedicated a song to their former producer Brendan O’ Brien, who was in attendance on Saturday. “Nothingman” and “Black” were the most heartfelt offerings of the night, which ended with “Alive,” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Drummer Matt Cameron, who also played with Soundgarden, kept the band’s pulse pounding throughout the show. Guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, along with bass player Jeff Ament have performed with Vedder for 20 years now and it’s obvious that they share a strong bond and respect in addition to incredible talent.

Thanks to a solid lineup, beautiful weather and hard-working support staff, Music Midtown 2012 seemed to have all the success of the festival’s glory days. But the times, they are a-changing. In years past, most fans would have their eyes glued to the performances on stage. But at any given moment this past weekend, 1 out of every 2 fans would be sending a text, tweet, or uploading photos or videos of the show. From one perspective, this could mean a more communal music experience (which is what a festival’s all about). Yet our mobile devices can also take us out of the “moment” when the crowd connects with the band, when the singer looks out to lock eyes with a devoted fan, or when a father wants to share the music of his youth with his son. Would anyone attend Music Midtown as a Wireless-less Fest? With only your memories or a t-shirt to prove you were there?

Slacker Radio showcased a slick artist’s lounge where rising stars like LP and Neon Trees stopped by for interviews. While 92.9 DAVE FM, a long-time supporter of bands like Garbage and Pearl Jam, had a quiet tent still standing just a week before the alternative rock station is scheduled to go off the air. Music fans in Atlanta have seen many changes over the years, but it looks like Music Midtown is here to stay–with both respect for its nostalgic roots and a platform for young artists to come.

Photos in order: O’ Brother, Civil Twilight, LP, Garbage, Ludacris, Neon Trees, Florence + The Machine, Girl Talk, and Pearl Jam.
photos will be added once approval is granted.

For over three decades, Duran Duran has made us hungry, captured the attention of beautiful girls on film, and represented the world’s most famous spy. They also seem to have developed a taste for Atlanta–last night’s concert at Chastain Park was their third visit in eighteen months to support the band’s thirteenth studio album, All You Need is Now.

So what have the boys from Birmingham been up to since we last heard from them? Lead singer Simon Le Bon seems to have made a full recovery after suffering damage to his vocal cords last summer. His voice was in top form last night and the entire band came together for some of their best sound in years. John Taylor (the funkin’ bass) recently released his autobiography called “In the Pleasure Groove–Love, Death, and Duran Duran,” while Roger Taylor (drums) enjoys a second career as a DJ when he’s not on tour with the band. Keyboard player Nick Rhodes celebrated his 50th birthday this summer, but his youthful countenance can only mean that there’s a Nagel print of the blond locked away somewhere, aging in an attic.

Duran fans narrowly missed a downpour at the start of the show, and the band appropriately opened with an orchestral lead into “Before the Rain.” An elegant beginning to the evening for a crowd that seemed decidedly casual without the tablecloths and champagne bottles often found at this venue. The front row tables gave way to a “pit” area of folding chairs directly in front of the stage where both prowling cougars and nubile limbs could mingle together.

The performance continued with “Planet Earth,” an upbeat hit from the band’s glamourous New Romantic era. The stylish James Bond theme “A View to a Kill” followed, complete with display of luxuriating female silhouettes on large video screens directly behind the band. Two expertly mixed tracks from the new album whipped fans into a frenzy, then Simon leaned into the crowd to find a few lucky audience members to sing the opening melody of “The Reflex.”

Duran Duran actively encourages creativity from their followers through fan art contests, social media sites, and a strong presence on the 3D virtual world, Second Life. On Second Life, members can create their own characters (avatars) with elaborate costumes and fantastic environments. Duran Duran featured some of their favorite fan avatars and photo contest winners as video art behind the stage. Seems like a great way to stay connected with the next generation of artists!

“Save A Prayer” sounded like soft Pacific breezes on an undulating sea of silk. We only had a moment to catch our breath before the band launched into funky favorites like “Notorious” and “White Lines.” ”Hungry Like the Wolf” had one false start, but recovered before melting into a rock version of the club hit “(Reach Up for) The Sunrise.” Guitarist Dominic Brown has been warmly embraced by fans as an unofficial member of the band since the early 2000′s, and plays just tough enough to give the music an updated edge. Testosterone levels rose with the combination of pounding guitar, machine gun drums and synth on “Wild Boys,” which sounded like an approaching army ready to burn Atlanta for a second time.

Battling boys aside, the ladies weren’t forgotten for long. A glittering encore of “Girls on Film” and “Rio” closed out the night on a very appropriate high fashion note.

—————————————————-

Set List: Before the Rain / Planet Earth / A View to a Kill / All You Need Is Now / Being Followed / The Reflex / Safe (In the Heat of the Moment) / Union of the Snake / Girl Panic! / Save A Prayer/ Notorious / White Lines / Ordinary World / Hungry Like the Wolf / (Reach Up for) The Sunrise / Wild Boys / Relax

Encore: Girls on Film / Rio

If you ever want to take an insider’s tour of San Francisco without leaving home, hop on the Mission Express and let Chuck Prophet be your guide. His latest record, Temple Beautiful, is named after one of the city’s rock clubs, and features a cast of characters best illustrated by Prophet’s live performance.

Backed by bandmates James dePrato, Kevin White, Kyle Caprista, and wife Stephanie Finch–Chuck tells the stories of San Francisco that you won’t find in history books. With a ringmaster’s flair and some sound advice from his 20 year journey as a touring rock musician, he is definitely more “prophet” than pilgrim.

The large crowd sang and swayed along with the music, in true revival style. Fans were treated to some of the inspirations behind Prophet’s pen: “Play That Song Again” recalls how everyone he ever met in San Francisco came from somewhere else, while “Castro Halloween” was created after someone brought a gun to a local neighborhood’s Halloween party. Prophet and dePrato skillfully teamed up for some joyful guitar interplay, and Finch’s keyboard melodies were infectious.

“Temple Beautiful” included a bit of audience participation with its call-and-response chorus, and several dedications were also made. “The Left Hand & The Right Hand” is a song about brothers in the sex business in San Francisco, and “White Night, Big City” is a lovely melodic tune with a somber tribute “for Harvey Milk.” The end of the song gave way to the night’s only foray into psychedelia, a genre that most would expect from a group with roots in San Francisco. This seemingly organic interlude was a highlight of the evening.

While Chuck Prophet shares some similarities to American storytellers like Bruce Springsteen or John Mellencamp, he has an original style all his own. The band will tour throughout the heartland and western US through the end of the summer.

The hottest (free) ticket of the weekend belonged to the Virginia-Highland Summerfest! 80’s alternative enthusiast and 92.9 DAVE FM DJ, Steve Craig, introduced the festival’s headlining band at approximately 4:30pm on Sunday’s scorching afternoon.

The Fixx launched into their set with “Red Skies” from the 1982 release, Shuttered Room. The audience of young and older fans with families immediately began to sing along.

Lead singer Cy Curnin appeared with a summer tan and exchanged a bit of banter with the sweltering crowd between songs. When one audience member asked him to remove his shirt, Curnin joked: “Take yours off!”

The performance continued with classic hits like “One Thing Leads to Another,” “Saved by Zero,” and “Are We Ourselves?” We were also treated to new material and lesser-known tracks such as “How Much is Enough?” from the 1991 album, Ink. Maybe it was the dizzying heat, but it was easy to start swaying to Curnin’s soaring vocals and the band’s occasional flirtation with an electro-psychedelic sound.

Guitarist Jaime West-Oram, keyboardist Rupert Grenna, bass player Dan K. Brown, and drummer Adam Woods have all performed as part of the band’s early lineup. They still appear to enjoy sharing the stage as well as writing music together.

The Fixx will release their tenth studio album, “Beautiful Friction” on July 17. They debuted the first single, “Anyone Else,” which has its darker moments, but reveals a bit of optimism and hope for our troubled times.

First Course: Best Brothers Band: Saturday, June 2, 3:15pm-4:15pm. Two brothers and a few good friends have been making music together since they were teens. The band hails from Destin, FL and cites U2, Lenny Kravitz, and Pink Floyd as influences. A generous helping of indie pop and uplifting harmonies will serve as a your appetizer for the weekend.

Second Course: JK and the Lost Boys: Sunday, June 3, 3:00pm-4:00pm. FYI, this is not Corey Feldman and the vampires from the 80′s flick. It’s the meat and potatoes of your rock festival. You may have caught this band live at Smith’s Olde Bar while tossing back a few. Both their acoustic ballads and hard-driving party songs are how the band likes to “express the feel-good vibes of teenage summers past.”

And for Dessert…The FIXX!!! Sunday, June 3, 4:30pm-6:00pm. Can hardly believe that this new wave phenomenon from the UK will be headline the festival on Sunday night! Fans are sure to hear hits like “One Thing Leads to Another,” “Stand or Fall,” and “Red Skies at Night.” And the band’s deeper cuts from the albums Shuttered Room and Reach the Beach are true gems of the early 80′s electronic scene. Arrive early and finish off your festival experience with this sweet treat–you’ll be saved by zero calories!

This menu is just a sampling of two full days packed with great music. Enjoy one of Atlanta’s best artists markets, a smorgasbord of festival food, and a chance to mingle with your neighbors–we recommend the entire feast for your senses!
