The Fat Boy Chronicles Taps Into the ATL Music Scene For Soundtrack – Movie Premier June 30 at The Plaza Theater

Inspired by a true story, The Fat Boy Chronicles reveals the emotionally painful world obese teens experience in the face of a thin-obsessed society. At age 14, 5’5″ Jimmy weighs in at 187 pounds. Outside the comfort of his family and church, life for Jimmy is a constant struggle. The cruel taunts of his classmates make going to school or playing sports a humiliating experience. Yet, he still manages to focus on his goals — to lose weight and win over the girl of his dreams.

Music Supervisor for the film, Kim Burdges (Mixtape Atlanta), tapped into the Atlanta music scene to create the perfect soundtrack for The Fat Boy Chronicles. Atlanta bands such as Weapons of Audio, Death On Two Wheels, Y-O-U, The Judies and All Get Out are featured in the film.

Mixtape Atlanta and Tin Roof Films present The Atlanta Premiere of The Fat Boy Chronicles. Cast, filmmakers, bands from the soundtrack, and other notables are all coming out to celebrate the release of this featured film based on the popular book by the same name.

Red carpet starts at 7 p.m.  and the film starts at 7:30 p.m. Ticket to premiere includes free admission to after-part/concert at Vinyl featuring performances by All Get Out and Weapons of Audio. Both bands’ music is featured in the film.

CD Review: When You’re Strange: A Film About the Doors — Soundtrack

When You’re Strange: A Film About the Doors
Rhino

By Al Kaufman

Jim Morrison will not die. Almost 30 years after his death, the rock and roll shaman still holds many a follower in his drunken sway. By the time he died in Paris in 1971, he was a bloated, alcoholic, ragamuffin, whose poetry had been reduced to “drunken gibberish,” according to Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Yet, like Elvis and Michael Jackson, death made him great again to mythical proportions. Tom DiCillo’s When You’re Strange is the latest attempt to revive those free-thinking times in which Morrison and the Doors overblown, apocalyptic songs and melodies flourished. They struck a chord with every disillusioned teen and Vietnam protester, and also to a lot of women who wanted to try to get inside Morrison’s whirling mind as much as his leather pants. The Doors were the perfect mix of psychedelia and freedom, of spirituality and sexuality. Plus they were all incredible musicians. Morrison’s mesmerizing but heavy-handed rants would not have stood up over time without Manzarek’s swirling keyboards, Robby Krieger’s heavy guitars, and John Densmore’s moody percussion. The bottom line is that the Doors, though not to everybody’s liking, were a great band, and great bands do not die. … Continue Reading

Atlanta Film Festival Opening Gala to Feature Stanley Nelson’s “Freedom Riders,” April 15

April 6, 2010 Festivals, Film No Comments

The Atlanta Film Festival is one of those gems that can be easily forgotten in the giddiness of the first signs of spring warmth. Yet it features some amazing creations as well as thrilling guests. The festival kicks off this year with a screening of Stanley Nelson’s Freedom Riders, a phenomenal piece of work about the 1961 Freedom Rides:

“Nearly 50 years after dozens of college students, Black and White, boarded two buses and risked their lives to challenge Jim Crow’s stranglehold and to push a nation to act, Freedom Riders is a film that documents a critical moment in American history and presents an amazing account of our nation’s conscience embodied in the actions of the young.”

The screening keeps up the festival’s tradition of introducing – or reacquainting – audiences with unsung heroes of American history. The film’s creator Stanley Nelson himself will be there, as well as many noted Civil Rights participants, including Ambassador Andrew Young.
