What’s Up Monday?

October 17, 2011 Atlanta Music News, Gigs No Comments

Oh it’s a quiet Monday here in the city, and looking at the weather forecast, it looks like this might be our last day of weather in the 80′s! So although there might not be a ton going on in the city, definitely try and get out and do something to enjoy the day!

-The Miller Lite Series continues at Smith’s Olde Bar tonight with some swampy “olde” style music, featuring performances by Swamp Candy, Joshua Michael Robinson, and Kassie Miller.

-I just love the Northside Tavern, there is always something awesome going on! Tonight join some of the most legendary players for their weekly Monday Night Blues Jam.

-Phalanx will be rocking it up at the 529, and considering every show the 529 puts on is pretty fantastic, you probably won’t regret checking this out.

-Have you been doing your Do, Re, Me’s? Well, head on over to Eddie’s Attic’s famous Songwriter Open Mic Night.

-After you have enjoyed  every last bit of sun, then head on down to the Ten High, for the infamous Metalsome Monday. They have shots their called “Orgasms” that will give you liquid courage to get on stage! Guaranteed!!

Reasons to love Atlanta? There is something bad ass to do almost every single night of the week! Tonight is slightly more electronic than most nights, but you would be hard pressed not to find an awesome show to check out tonight.

-Love, love, love the Cold War Kids! Tonight’s show at The Buckhead Theatre will be packed, so if are in that part of town, you should definitely try and check them out.

-Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs has been declared “one of the most exciting young rock n’roll bands in the world.” See for yourself tonight at The Earl.

-There is something about a band that other bands talk about that usually means that they are pretty phenomenal. Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s are one of those bands that is worthy of any High Fidelity playlist. Check them out tonight at The Drunken Unicorn.

-Lydia Loveless is a 19 year old songstress with a huge buzz building around her. With Patsty Cline haunting lyrics and vocals, this will be a show at Smith’s Olde Bar to say “I saw her when.”

-The tweensters  will be out in full force tonight at The Tabernacle where, flat-ironed hair hero Never Shout Never will be making your girls (and the occasional boy) feel “weird.”

-The Masquerade is banging tonight! On any level, you will be able to find a hopping show. Liverpool’s electronic Ladytron will be whipping out the glow sticks upstairs in Heaven. Indie hipsters, Grouplove, will be getting it fresh in Purgatory, did you happen to see our 5GB with the band?

Before I tell you about all the awesome happenings in Atlanta tonight, please forgive me for the inconsistency of posts! I know I have been all over the place lately, but computers are back up and running, and we should be right back on track! So without further ado, here are some awesome musical events to keep you entertained tonight.

-The Queen Bee of the 80′s, Cyndi Lauper, will be having a whole lot of fun at the Cobb Energy Centre tonight.

-Oh, and tonight at The Earl, Charlotte’s own Benji Hughes will be doing it up right. You might remember some of his songs from hit shows like  90210 and How I Met Your Mother. With a new record out, this is a show not to be missed!

-Everyone’s fave Perez Hilton approved celebrity boyfriend, turned Coy-friend, Ryan Cabrera is showing his softer side tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-One of my FAVORITE nights in Atlanta, is at Eddie’s Attic tonight. The ATL Collective presents the Beatles Revolver, featuring performances from Death on Two Wheels, Micah Dalton, and Molly Parden.

-There are some talented singer/songwriters playing tonight at Wonderroot. If you find yourself in the West End tonight, make sure and check out Allison Weiss, Bess Rogers, Places To Hide, Night Driving in Small Towns.

-Canadian pop duo, PS I Love You will be fuzz popping it up at the 529. Joining them will be Mood Rings and Red Sea.

What’s Up Tuesday?

October 11, 2011 Atlanta Music News No Comments

Happy Tuesday Everyone! Yesterday I found out that Paul McCartney  gets married on John Lennon‘s birthday, former Weezer bassist prophetically tweets about his own death, and a woman drove into Tin Lizzy’s! I know it is a full moon, but this is a bit much! Here are some things to do tonight, just make sure you don’t let any black cats in your way.

-Tonight at The Tabernacle, British geezers Arctic Monkeys will be spilling the Stellas all over their feisty crowd (which might be made up almost entirely of ex-pats). If you have never seen the band live, however, you must go. They are definitely entertaining.

-It is impossible to live in this city and not have at least heard of the great and talented Mr. Clay Cook. Besides being one of the members of the Zac Brown Band, Clay is one of the most incredible musicians I have ever seen in person. It is a special solo show at his original stomping ground, Eddie’s Attic for Mr. Cook tonight; joining him will be long time friend, and local Atlanta chanteuse, Emily Kate Boyd.

-Sometimes you just need a little soulful music to get your week going right. Tonight, The Drunken Unicorn presents Gospel Music featuring Owen Holmes of the Black Kids.

-In the Atlanta Room at Smith’s Olde Bar, Righteous Babe Records Ed Hamell a.k.a. Hamell On Trial, a one-man punk show, brings you (mostly) loud, fast music informed by politics, passion, energy, and intelligence, played by a guy with a sharp tongue and a wicked sense of humor.

More Than a Band: Saying Goodbye to R.E.M

October 11, 2011 Atlanta Music News, News 4 Comments

By Scott Roberts

Beloved Athens band R.E.M. announced, with little fanfare and on a Wednesday, that after 31 years they had decided to call it a day. The news crept over me insidiously as I went from a sort of ho-hum response (as I hadn’t really cared much about the band’s music since original drummer Bill Berry bowed out in 1997 after surviving an aneurism) to a sense of deep loss as I was hit with the reality that this entity who had been with me throughout my entire adult life would no longer be here. This realization made it difficult for me to find the proper words and sentiments, thus making this post a bit later than similar eulogies that probably appeared closer to the actual date of the announcement, September 21.   … Continue Reading

Oh how I love fall!! Falling leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, and scarves, bring it on! A special shout out to Dean Roland of Collective Soul (and now of his latest project, Magnets and Ghosts) who’s celebrating his birthday today! Here are some fun things to do to really start off your week right.

-Brazilian heavy metal act, Cavalera Conspiracy, aren’t scared of a little guitar thrashing. See the newly reformed rockers tonight at The Loft.

- Do you think there is a reason that all the scary heavy metal bands schedule their shows in October? The Greek metallic powerhouse Firewind, led by the modern day guitar hero Gus G, is extremely excited to announce their first ever headlining North American tour, dubbed the “Frets of Fury.” See them tonight at The Masquerade.

-The Miller Lite Concert Series continues at Smith’s Olde Bar tonight, featuring Vacant House, Buxton, Parry Adams.

-For a more chill evening, please go and support the singer songwriters out at Eddie’s Attic’s weekly Open Mic Night.

What’s Up Wednesday?

Well as I sit here and type my last post of living in Atlanta, I must say I will miss this fair city. Luckily for me, it is only 3 hours away! In a few more hours, I will be packing up and driving to Nashville, but if I was in town, here are a couple of things that I would consider doing.

-One of my favorite bands from the 90′s, The Lemonheads, will be performing It’s a Shame About Ray, tonight at The Earl.

-Brooklyn alt. hip/hop act, Das Racist will be cracking you up at The Loft.

-It’s the “Best Of” Miller Lite series tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar, featuring triple A’s: The Aquanauts, American Anodyne, and Amsterdam Station.

-If you have never seen Ghostland Observatory, please please please get your butt down to The Masquerade, they will put you in a trance.

- It might be worth a look at Eddie’s Attic tonight, where Caravan of Thieves, the gypsy inspired act, touring around in support of their debut album, Mischief Night.

-Americana in the Park continues tonight at Park Tavern with the Dappled Grays and Maynard Terrace.

On Oct 6-9, Callaway Gardens plays host to the first ever Harvest Moon Festival, including performances from musical guests, Georgia’s own B-52s, Mat Kearny, Shawn Colvin, the Gin Blossoms, and Big Head Todd.

The festival kicks off Thursday, Oct 6 with the “Harvest Feast”, hosted by The Food Network’s Claire Robinson.  Robinson will provide a demonstration on how to use fresh ingredients and then guests will dine on a farm-to-table dinner while taking in performances from a diverse trio of talented singer-songwriters, including Joe Purdy and Nic Cowan.

What’s Up Thursday?

September 29, 2011 Atlanta Music News No Comments

We are almost to the weekend!

-It’s day two at the Cobb Energy Centre with alt rockers, Wilco. They are joined by the legendary Nick Lowe, so if you missed last night’s show, be sure to try and make this one.

-One of the most buzzed about bands from other bands I have heard about lately, Shovel and Rope, is playing at The Earl tonight. Led by the soulful husband and wife duo Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, this show will be a musician haven.

-You may have heard Matthew Mayfield’s music in Grey’s Anatomy, and you can check out this singer songwriter tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog have declared Kendrick Lamar the “new king of the West.” Catch this rapper tonight at The Masquerade, joined by Dom Kennedy.

-I became a fan of Explosions in the Sky, after hearing them on Elbow radio on Pandora. Their music is ethereal and they are playing at The Tabernacle tonight.

What’s Up Wednesday?

September 28, 2011 Atlanta Music News, Gigs No Comments

As I write this I am currently recovering from a fun night with my closest ones, and the thought of going out tonight seems rather exhausting, but if you are feeling frisky tonight, here are some great things for you to do.

-Tonight starts the two day shows at the Cobb Energy Center for the ever so awesome Wilco, and with Nick Lowe joining them, you definitely don’t want to miss these.

-Prog rockers, Umphrey’s McGee will be jam banding it up at The Tabernacle.

-With his new What Were You Hoping For?, Van Hunt employs a spare but dizzyingly vibrant meld of day-glo psychedelic soul laced with glammed-up riffs and the acerbic energy of punk. Check him tonight at The Earl.

-It takes a certain type of musician to hop freight trains and barrel across the vastness of North America with his brother and cousin.  Especially for an artist who, just years before, sold out Madison Square Garden for three consecutive nights. Chad “Chadwick” Stokes is anything but a typical rock star. Check him out tonight at The Loft.

-For an awesome night of Blues, definitely head over to Eddie’s Attic to catch local fave, Joe McGuiness as he plays with Casey Dresissen and the Colorfools.
