Hello city of Atlanta! So let’s be honest, how many of you already have your Christmas decorations up? I can’t help but to laugh at the amount of folks that cannot even wait till December before putting up their holiday lights! But it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and that means there will be much joying to do. Here is your Hump Day agenda.

-Maynard James Keenan, of Tool and A Perfect Circle fame, brings his Puscifer project  to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in support of his new album, Conditions of My Parole.

-Hailing from the same New Jersey town that produced Matt Pinfield, New Brunswick’s own, Thursday, will be at The Loft tonight.

-Check out Atlanta rockers, The Pinx, tonight at The Earl. Joining them will be The Higher Choir.

-Started in the summer of 2010, the Atlanta Funk Society brought together a collection of some of the best musicians Atlanta had to offer. See them live tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-For $5 it is a steal to check out the Husseins who are playing the 529 with Last Years Men and Factory North.

-Gotta love some Joe McGuinness! Go see his awesomeness live with his trio at Blind Willies.

Happy Tuesday y’all! Well there is definitely not that much going on in Atlanta tonight! However, if you do feel like taking a little gander outside, here are some events worth checking out.

-The Queen of the Keys is back! And she is kicking off her first tour in years right here in our fine city. Tori Amos will be playing a packed out show tonight at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

-Remember, Eddie’s Attic changed the dates and are hosting their Songwriter Open Mic Night tonight!

-Check out Young Buffalo at The Masquerade, along with Slowwriter and The Claymores.

And honestly that’s about all. Now go enjoy your day!

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had an enjoyable and restful holiday weekend. Now, I know it’s Monday and the thought of going back to work simply seems tragic, but at least the countdown to Christmas has begun! If you feel like heading out in this dreary weather, here are a couple of things for you to do.

-Mark Sultan is back. A long-time fixture in the garage-rock scene since fronting infamous Montreal punk band, The Spaceshits, these days he is best known as the ‘BBQ’ half of The King Khan & BBQ Show. See him tonight at The Earl.

- You know something is up when Eddie’s’ Attic’s famous “Songwriter Open Mic Night” HAS BEEN MOVED TO TUESDAY!  Instead, catch Atlanta songstress, Kelly Mcfarling plays with another local song-teller, Adron.

-The Miller Lite Concert Series continues tonight in the Atlanta Room at Smith’s Olde Bar with Mister Natchez.

-And then of course there is always Metalsome Mondays at the Ten High inside the Dark Horse!

Happy Day Before Thanksgiving!!!!! Hopefully many of you are with family right now or working a half day and getting ready to stuff your face! But considering today is a traditional day for going out and waving your own tail feathers here are some fun events to get you ready for the festivities tomorrow. Just remember, TAKE A CAB!

-The only place to be tonight is definitely at the Center Stage Complex for The Stuffing! Featuring Manchester Orchestra & their Favorite Gentlemen friends. This concert is SOLD OUT, so hopefully you got your tickets early!

-I know that Nashville is the land of the songwriters, but Ryan Horne is one of those musicians that simply cannot be contained by one city. He is at Eddie’s Attic tonight, celebrating the release of his new record.

-Dubbing themselves the protectors of southern punk rock, Atlanta’s own, The Bastard Suns will be rocking out in Hell at The Masquerade tonight with Groovestain and S.S. Vendetta.

-My newly Nashvillian neighbor, Jessica Cayne Urick, is playing an early show tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar. Joining her is the Brandon Perry Band, Back City Woods, and Kaitlin Jones.

There is just something about the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, that just makes me want to stay in my pi’s all day long, and do nothing! But alas, here are our events for the eve, just in case you feel like getting squirrelly.

-Emperor X is the project name of American songwriter and noise pop saboteur C. R. Matheny. The quirky musician plays Smith’s Olde Bar tonight.

-If you are the type of person that enjoys having fake blood thrown on them, staining clothes, hair, and even your teeth, then head over to The Masquerade where other blood-addicts will be rushing the stage to see Gwar.

-Atlanta boy, Micheal Tolcher , is a busy man. In 2010, Michael spent a week educating attendees of the Sunscreen Film Festival, where he instructed the crowd on the effects of the correct song in film or television episode, the writing process, and shared information on how to get new music into the motion picture industry. Catch him at Eddie’s Attic.

-Maverick record mavens, Tantric, will be waking up the sleepy town of Buford, GA tonight at 37 Main...I know, I know, weird.

CD Review: R.E.M. — Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011

R.E.M.
Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011
Warner Brothers

By Al Kaufman

For many people outside of Georgia, R.E.M. broke up about 15 years too late. They should have called it quits after Bill Berry retired and before Michael Stipe started bitching in his songs. R.E.M. had a few lean years in there, when Reveal, Up and the like were released, but showed a great creative resurgence with their last two studio albums, Accelerate and Collapse Into Now. But, alas, people had already moved on. R.E.M. realized this and wisely called it quits. … Continue Reading

Happy Turkey week everyone! There is not too much going on this week, but there are still a couple of great events to distract you from family festivities.

-It’s a double dose of fun tonight at The Masquerade, where the Thrash and Burn tour will be coming through Heaven featuring Winds of Plague, Chelsea Grin, As Blood Runs Black, For The Fallen Dreams, Upon A Burning Body, In The Midst Of Lions, Like Moths To Flames, and voted winner Volumes.

-Downstairs in Hell, NYC synth lovers, Holy Ghost!, will be getting everyone dancing.

-Regardless of the recent change of ownership, Eddie’s Attic will still be hosting its Songwriter Open Min Mondays.

-Since in the next few days, you are going to get a big dose of family time, might be best to practice your drunken karaoke tonight at the Ten High for Metalsome Monday.

AMG Weekend Picks: Tandoori Knights, Gringo Star, Lykke Li and More!

November 17, 2011 Atlanta Music News, Gigs 1 Comment

Things are a little mellow this weekend, probably with everyone gearing up for the big Turkey Fest coming up next week. But there is still a ton of incredible shows, and a donka-truck-tonnage of tickets going on sale, so you can get some Christmas shopping done too (and pick yourself up something nice while you’re at it). And, in non-music news, Kids in the Hall’s wonderful Dave Foley will be doing stand up comedy Thursday through Sunday at the Laughing Skull. … Continue Reading

What’s Up Tuesday?

It is November, and 73 degrees. Ree-Dic-U-Los. Happy Tuesday everyone, let’s hope that the weather gods remember that it is technically the fall and not allowed to be tanning weather. Back to our regular scheduled program: Here are your events for Tuesday….be merry and procreate.

-The Fling is an L.A. band triumphed on KROQ..but before you get all judgmental, they are actually pretty dope. The group draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of folk, rock, pop and psychedelic music. Their sound has been described as “classic ’60s pop, ’90s alternative, and contemporary indie-rock clashing fluidly to create a strangely nostalgic effect.” Just go see them at The Earl.

-Monster-Energy-Outbreak-Tour at the Masquerade. Really do I need to say anything else about this? Featuring Of Mice and Men,I Wrestled A Bear Once, I See Stars, Abandon All Ships, That’s Outrageous! I have no doubt that this crowd will probably not be old enough to drink, but will sell out regardless. Weird.

-Starkid are stars in their own right, cause they are riding the new wave of music marketing. To date, StarKid has garnered over 97 million views and 185,000 subscribers on YouTube, 160,000 Facebook fans, and 74,000 Twitter followers worldwide, and captured the attention of national media such as Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, “Access Hollywood,” “Entertainment Tonight,” NPR, and MTV. Pay Attention and learn at Center Stage.

-Yes he is a hitchhiker, yes he likes whiskey, yes he might seem semi-prententious by living up to this pseduo-lifestyle, but he is good. Undeniably worth listening to. And with a name like Pokey Lafarge, why would you purposely try to not see this live. Go to Smith’s Olde Bar tonight and be baptized.

Happy Monday y’all! Did you have a good weekend? This week seems a little weird; the week before Thanksgiving, it is warm outside, definitely thinking global warming exists! Here’s your Monday update for all things good music!

-The term “Americana” might seem like a brand new genre, but really this all American country roots music has been around for quite some time! Just ask bands like The Felice Brothers, and Gil Landry of Old Crow Medicine Show who will be playing live tonight at The Earl.

-L.A. heavy metal rockers, Five Finger Death Punch, will be handing out whiplash at The Tabernacle.

- Over at Vinyl, Chicago indie rockers I Fight Dragons are playing with The Protomen.

-In the Atlanta Room, at Smith’s Olde Bar, The Miller Lite Concert Series continues with Adam Klein & the Wild Fires, Chris Milam, and Vespolina.

New Owners For Beloved Venue Eddie’s Attic

November 10, 2011 Atlanta Music News No Comments

By Eileen Tilson/ @tktalt_tn

Eddie’s Attic has some new owners, and let’s just say they are kinda a big deal.

Legendary concert promoter, Alex Cooley, and his business partner and long time friend, former Delta Captain, Dave Mattingly, will be purchasing Eddie’s Attic effective December 1st, 2011.  In a brief note to the Club’s staff, customers, vendors and performers, current owner Bob Ephlin comments:

“It’s been my privilege to work alongside the dedicated staff at Eddie’s Attic for the past 6 1/2 years.  I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished, and of our stewardship of a brand that, for almost 20 years now, has been dedicated to amplifying the magic of the artist/listener connection in an intimate listening room setting.  I’m grateful for the support and loyalty of our customers and the City of Decatur, and thankful for the many aspiring and accomplished songwriters and musicians that have graced our stage.

I’m confident that Alex and Dave will do a great job taking Eddie’s Attic to the next level.  I believe its best days are ahead of it, and I look forward to supporting its continued success as an advisor, loyal customer, and fan of performing songwriters.

What do you think of this? Personally, I think this is the beginning of a VERY great thing….

Congratulations to Gregg Allman and the Zac Brown Band for representing Georgia right last night at the CMA awards doing an amazing version of our state song!  This week has been such a blast, and now we are officially about to roll into the weekend. If you need some help kicking off your plans, here are some fun shows to check out.

- Nathan Angelo is worth seeing. Not only has this talented musician toured with the likes of the Fray, Zac Brown Band, Marc Broussard and Matt Wertz, he is also an incredibly nice person! Support this home town boy, tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-If you are feeling a little scrappy tonight, saunter yourself over to the Masquerade where Ben Nichols will be spitting the truth with his band Lucero. Joining them is Atlanta’s own, Death on Two Wheels.

-Indie-rock veterans, Mister Heavenly, will be playing at The Earl tonight with Mr. Dream. Hopefully their music won’t live up to the same characteristics as their names suggest!

-Do you like southern inspired funk? I sure do, which is I love me some Delta Saints, who will be playing tonight at Vinyl with Jeremy Aggers.

-For our own little soul inspired funk, make sure and check out Atlanta’s son, Ben Deignan, will be shaking his tail feathers tonight as part of the Live at the Loews Atlanta Hotel.

Oh my goodness what an incredibly fun night! As amazing as Nashville is during the CMA’s, I have to admit that I am pretty jealous that y’all get to see my current favorite band tonight! So without further ado, here is my list of fun-ness for you tonight.

-If I was in Atlanta, there would be no other place to go tonight except straight to The Earl, to see my current favorite band, The Alabama Shakes. This band is about to blow up, so make sure and see them in a small intimate venue while you can.

-However, if you don’t feel like venturing over to East Atlanta tonight, then march yourself straight to Vinyl, where Nashvillians, Kopecky Family Band will be entertaining the crowds with their infectious indie rock.

-Hip Hop for Palestine is unifying Atlanta’s hip hop community in support of Palestine’s biggest hip hop crew, DAM, and their message of resistance. Join forces with them tonight at The Loft.

-Feeling a little N’awlins-y? Head over to Smith’s Olde Bar where MarchFourth Marching Band, the mobile big band spectacular, will be playing. Consisting of a brassy pack of saxophones, trombones, and trumpets, a raucous drum/percussion corps, anchored by a mobile and wireless electric bass, this should be a very fun show.

-Over at the Masquerade, indie-soul duo The Foreign Exchange will be showing off some new tunes.  Picking up where their 2008 Grammy-nominated “Leave It All Behind” set left off, “Authenticity” is the group’s most diverse work to date, the first 150 tickets are $20.00!

-And don’t forget the wildy eclectic, Todd Rundgren’s Utopia will be joined by Kevin Ellman at Center Stage.

It’s CMA week here in Nashville, which simply means this city is jam packed with the biggest country stars in the nation. Unfortunately, all the parties in this town are by invite only, so sadly I will be fantasizing of the cool things I could be doing tonight. However, for all of you in Atlanta, here are some cool shows to entertain yourself with.

-Floridian pop-punkers, Yellowcard, are back and they are playing at The Masquerade with Every Avenue and Go Radio.

-Los Angeles’ The Daylights, have had the spotlight turned on them lately like charting on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart Top 20, having a Top 5 radio single on Sirius Hits, a late show national television appearance, and securing coveted spots on sold-out tours with Katy Perry, OneRepublic and NeedtoBreathe. Joined by Nashville’s own, Andy Davis at Vinyl.

-Virginia’s own, HURT, are about to release their 5th album, The Crux, in March 2012, check them out before hand tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-The super group trend has yet to settle, iso head on over to The Earl for the hipster version of the supergroup, Russian Circles who are playing with Deaf Heaven.

-Leave it to The 529 for being the coolest venue in the city. Tonight come checkout the dreamy Cloud Nothings and Gold Bear.
