Picture Book: Death Cab for Cutie at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, August 11

August 12, 2011 Gigs, Picture Book 2 Comments

By Catrina Maxwell

Indie crossovers Death Cab for Cutie played to a sweaty but energetic crowd of giddy fans on Thursday night. The band played a packed set that saw them try out some new tracks from their latest release, Codes and Keys, including the “VH1 Storytellers”-featured song “You Are A Tourist,” which was warmly accepted by fans as a new Death Cab standard.

The gig was an extra-festive affair, with it being the birthday of the band’s fearless leader, Ben Gibbard. Gibbard was extra-chatty, mentioning to a shirtless guy in the crowd that the show was rated PG-13. Gibbard then had the crowd confirm that the guy had his pants on and asked him to please keep his pants on as this was a family event and laughed. The crowd was really getting into the birthday spirit with birthday balloons being thrown up on stage as well as the random scream of “Happy birthday!” from the audience.

Live Review & Picture Book: The Accidents, Coliseum, Corrosion Of Conformity at The EARL, August 3

The Accidents posted their bluesy-rock set, which introduced their newest vinyl EP, on YouTube. William Duvall (Neon Christ, Alice In Chains), who produced the EP, joined his friends on stage for the finale, “Big Girls,” and then Coliseum took over. Both openers fit well with the style of music COC fans enjoy; those who missed the acts would do well to check them out online.

Corrosion Of Conformity dominated teenage playlists and rock radio stations throughout the ’90s, and the fact that three of the four original members are back at it after almost 20 years and countless line-up changes speaks to the power of a passion for performing music.

Picture Book & Live Review: Furthur at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, July 31

The scene out in front of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre held a magical nostalgia with too-young-to-be-hippies camped out with babies and dogs waving fingers in the air to signal the need for a free ticket in. To a casual observer, it would appear a documentary on the late ’60s or mid-’70s, but these fans held the same spirit of those in protesting war and following the Dead on tour. It made me wonder what the boys in the band really thought about the devoted fans; beyond appreciation there could just be a sort of sadness for those refusing to accept the moments of the present. Looking through the posted set lists from the recent (and all) shows, lets fans know that by following the band you really do get a new show each and every night. The Dead was a band that blossomed live and most of the recorded music came from those live shows.  … Continue Reading

Live Review: A Perfect Circle at The Tabernacle, July 20

By Ellen Eldridge

A part of every fan feels proud – privileged even – to clutch a ticket to a sold-out show. Considering the fact that A Perfect Circle sold out the Tabernacle in Atlanta months before the July 20 show meant many paid a pretty penny for the privilege as scalpers sold tickets at well above the face value right up to the last minute. … Continue Reading
