I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off my Memorial Day weekend than cozying up in my favorite corner table at Eddie’s Attic for their Songwriter Series featuring my good and mucho talented friend, Ben Deignan with his special guests Jessica Cayne and Scotty Cram.

I have seen this trio perform at Eddie’s before and those performances have always been some of my favorite experiences at the venue. The show sets you up for a fantastic evening of live music.

The beautiful Jessica Cayne set up shop with her PBR tall boy and chilled bourbon on hand. I enjoy hearing Jessica play, not only because she is incredibly talented and charming, but also because I can relate to her music. What girl wouldn’t relate to her song “Possession” inspired by Fifty Shades of Gray or her tune “You Made a Liar Out of Me” about chasing guys around Nashville. Jessica knows her target audience well; the group of single, jaded, 20-somethings at the table to her right. The highlight of Jessica’s set (besides the boy bashing tunes) was her last song “Pretty Girl” covering the insecurities we all go through as humans and I truly appreciated how honest she was at that moment on stage. “To be truly selfless you must be selfish” that quote will forever stick with me, and I still have chills from that song.

Up next was the adorable and equally talented Scotty Cram. I’d seen Scotty perform a handful of times and he isn’t your average musician singing songs about love. Scotty’s voice is very unique and the passion behind his songs is real. He is also a great storyteller telling us tales of heartache and being in love. My favorite song of his was “You Don’t Deserve the Crown” turning the tables on us ladies in the audience letting us know that females can break just as many hearts as the fellas. The highlight of Scotty’s set was when he and Ben sang the fun and crowd pleasing “Alabama Slammer”. While Jessica fueled the current anti-man and relationship movement I’m currently riding, Scotty derailed it with a set full of love songs.

Last but certainly not least Mr. Ben Deignan took the stage. This review may be biased because he is a friend of mine, but let me set up this disclaimer. One of my first shows as a new Atl-ien was one of Ben’s performances at Eddie’s (that I saw in an email from my good friends at Ticket Alternative). I will admit I was first drawn to his looks in his suave little black and white photo but as a legit music fan I did my research and caught a few of his songs on YouTube and was definitely impressed. Fast-forward two years later catching his third show at the venue. Ben started out with some of his older songs including “Educate Me” and songs from the Dirty Laundry Mix Tape, including “Cool” which is my favorite Deignan tune. Ben covered the Bruno Mars tune “When I was Your Man” which the crowd was very pleased with. Ben debuted a new song “Bad” which blew me away as it was very honest and raw. I’ve always been drawn to Ben’s sound because it is so unexpected, unique, and powerful all at the same time. The show closed with “Half Past Three in Carolina” rejoining the trio and their talented bands leaving the crowd more than satisfied with their evening at Eddie’s.

I applaud Ben for bringing us a night full of talent. He knows what he is doing with Jessica warming up the crowd, getting us ladies mad at our men. Scotty comes in and melts our hearts making us want a man, then Ben closes the show making you want to take that man to bed. That is enough praise for Mr. Deignan from me, can’t let his head get too big now.

Check out Ben Deignan, Jessica Cayne and Scotty Cram on their official sites!

We had an AMG correspondent at Hangout Music Fest this year, and in between sets we were able to sit down and chat with The Tontons before they took the stage. Here’s what the band had to say about influences, crotch-thrusting and the impending apocalypse.

What artist(s) has had a big hand in developing your sound?

That’s a hard one because every couple months we cycle through a bunch of random music ranging all over. One month we were into ELO hardcore, we were into Ariel Pink for a long time, Chris Cohen, Dirty Projectors. We are a big fan of Twin Sister also.

How do you guys connect with a crowd when you’re playing a show?

A lot of crotch thrusting – Honestly, on stage our performance is very theatrical and a lot of people vibe with that.

What has been your most memorable gig so far?

I feel like it might be this one after we play it. We’ve been at the artist lounge for a while now.

What’s the craziest or kindest thing a fan has done for you guys so far?

This guy sent us an email from Brazil telling us how much he loved our music. It was really sweet that he found us and knew all the songs. He genuinely wanted to let us know how much he liked our music.

What song are you guys most proud of? If so, why?

We are writing a new record now so we have been writing a ton of new songs and every time we write a new one we think that songs really cool. I don’t think we could be satisfied with just one favorite song.

Do you guys have any pre-show rituals?

We try not to get too drunk.

How’d y’all meet?

The music scene in Houston. We all met at Guitar Center.

Big thank to the Tontons for chatting with us! Check them out!

We had an AMG correspondent at Hangout Fest this year and we got the opportunity to interview Nashville band, The Wild Feathers. Here’s what Ricky Young and Ben Jarvis of the band had to say:

How do you guys connect with the crowd when you’re playing a show?

Ricky Young: A lot of dancing…a lot of tight clothing. Really I think it’s just trying to have as much as you possibly can and not worry about anyone else. I feel like when I kinda let go people will react more.

What has been your most memorable gig so far?

Ricky Young: The Louisville Palace in Kentucky opening up for Bob Dylan…and we did a couple great shows with Paul Simon not too long ago.

What’s the craziest, or kindest thing a fan has done for you guys so far?

Ricky Young: We get a lot of interesting signs that have hashtags in front of them. They have song names and that’s pretty cool, we like to see that, and a lot of people want our setlists – which is interesting to me.

Ben Jarvis: When people ask for a drum stick I break I always love that. When I was a kid I used to always ask the drummer for a drum stick so when somebody asks me it’s very special.

What song are you most proud of so far?

Ricky & Ben: The best way I can answer that is, the song I have the most fun playing live would be “Hard Times.” It was coming out of a place of complete, sheer desperation and it was not only about our personal lives but the state of the country. It’s the most honest thing I have been a part of, and I love getting to listen to everyone in the band sing. It’s emotional.

What’s the first show you guys ever went to?

Ben Jarvis: I think mine was Reba McEntire.

Ricky Young: Mine was Silverchair and Local H.

If you were to die in the next hour, what would you do?

Ricky Young: Call my mom and dad and talk to them for 59 minutes.

Ben Jarvis: I was gonna say try to fuck somebody but…

Has anyone said anything really mean to you on Twitter?

Ricky & Ben: I haven’t seen any mean tweets or anything. We get a lot of nice tweets. One time we were asking for jokes and somebody told a very racist joke and we did not favorite that. That was probably the meanest tweet.

How did you guys get started with music?

Ricky Young: My dad used to play around on the guitar when I was a kid. He’d play Eagles songs, Willie Nelson songs and even some Neil Young. I used to make up my own interpretations of what the words meant and I think that really got me into songs and stories. My dad doesn’t know that, but that’s the honest truth.

Ben Jarvis: My story’s kind of similar. My dad’s a drummer and he always had a drum set around the house and one day when I was 10 years old I started playing it and that was it.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

Ricky Young: We have some interesting dates on this tour that we can’t really talk about yet. It’s really awesome and we’re really thrilled about it.

You can check out the Wild Feathers here and look for them out on tour this year!

This is going to be an AWESOME Memorial Day weekend! Check out the rest of the schedule below!

Friday, May 24th-The Music Tapes presents The Traveling Imaginary at Erikson Clark

Friday, May 24th-Waller w/ Vandaveer at The EARL

This band is pure Americana. The music speaks for itself and comes through the speakers with such roots clarity that everyone in the room will feel a bit of Americana nostalgia.

Friday, May 24th-Haley and Alexis at Smiths Olde Bar

This young duo has louder and bigger than ever. The two young girls who make up the band are not only true Georgia natives, but also identical twins. That kind of connection is unique in the music industry, and they have made that aspect their advantage. Even with all their similarities, the girls still bring two different perspectives to any stage they take.

Saturday, May 25th-Alchemy at Vinyl

This band may be just a little over a year old, but time hasn’t been necessary for these Atlanta natives. The alternative rock band formed last January, and they have been running every since to keep up in the fast paced rock world. Go out and support your locals at this concert.

Saturday, May 25th-Radar at Smiths Olde Bar

In the 60s, Radar was known for their classic southern rock style, and today the guys are back together on the same stage ones more. The familiar sound of crisp guitars and heavy vocals will still be there for all the old fans looking to see them again.

Saturday, May 25th-Mount Carmel w/ special guests at The EARL

We caught up with drummer DX of UV Race! The Aussie genius avant-tards UV Race, a band that drags melodious pop songs through a glam-punk aesthetic similar to bands like Ty Segall and Eddie Current Suppression Ring, released its third LP last year on In The Red Records alongside the band’s first feature-length film. Check out what he had to say!

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you?

Sent us pornographic pictures of themselves fornicating with the sun. Art.

What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist/band so far?

That is very difficult. Basically, life is a long procession of meaningless tasks in service of rich people and occasionally you get to laugh. You join a band like this so you can laugh more than you would at your job or school. I have been laughing over the last five years non stop. Look at this photo of Marcus.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

No. Tequila helps.

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?

GLAM.

How do you connect with a crowd?

There are six of us so usually someone is falling into someone. That’s a good connection.

How did you come up with your band name?

Science.

What is the best way to write music?

For effect. When you listen to The Pagans you’re feeling something very direct and primal. This is ideal.

Total Control:

Australian punk band Total Control is cruising through the United States this summer, playing post-punk jams from their split with Thee Oh Sees, Henge Beat (2011), and new songs from their forthcoming LP.

Total Control features Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring) and Daniel Stewart (Straightjacket Nation / UV Race.) The band captures the essence of bands including Suicide, Wire and Joy Division, with just as much emphasis on the punk as the post. Total Control’s simple and cold loopy songs have explosions, spacey instruments and sci-fi lyrics that seem to come from the paranoid Charles Burns / Philip K. Dick camp.

Total Control plays Atlanta’s 529 on May 27 along with UV Race! Daniel Stewart took the time to answer our 5GB interview questions:

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I saw maybe four hardcore bands play at my local youth centre: a couple hundred Goths, skins, punks, skaters, surfers and straight-up psycho drug pigs forced to agree on something.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Don’t do this to me. I’m a nice person; I pay my taxes and always hold doors open for people. I can tell you that every show I’ve played in Georgia has been memorable, if you respect ass-kissing and audience pandering.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

The cultural divide between our nations makes it difficult to tell if you are being mean spirited, but in respect of diplomacy, with a straight face I can tell you that the following bands are most memorable: all four aforementioned teenage hardcore bands, Neil Young from side stage close enough to spit on, Eddy Current Suppression Ring were untouchable, Out With A Bang at Horrible fest 2007 were like the Germs pitched through time and they were Italian… I saw the Dead C a couple months ago and they were incredible too….

Gig you would most like to play?

Send me back to the Rocket from the Tombs / Mirrors / Electric Eels show and I’ll happily lose a couple of my non-essential teeth.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

I would like to play with Neil Young backed up by Cheetah Chrome Motherfuckers.

Get your tickets to see these two awesome bands on Monday, May 27 at 529!

Photos and review by Jenna Hughes

Paramore returned to Atlanta on May 21 at the Tabernacle, closing out the North American portion of the tour supporting their new self-titled album. The band released Paramore in January of this year and it debuted at #1 on the charts, proving to naysayers that the band has staying power in the modern pop/punk scene. Their sound has evolved since the departure of Josh and Zac Ferro, which seems to have inspired many of the new songs.

Hayley Williams and guitarist Taylor York came out on stage together, a spotlight shining on them both as they launched into an unplugged “Interlude: Moving On,” with York strumming a mandolin. Hayley, dressed in a Johnny Cash t-shirt covered in spray paint, sang earnestly, “Well I could be angry, but you’re not worth the fight, and besides I’m moving on.” The crowd responded with deafening cheers, and the band exploded into their first hit “Misery Business” from 2007’s Riot. Hayley ran back and forth across the stage pumping up the crowd while lasers filled the Tabernacle from floor to ceiling, encompassing her never-ending energy.

“For A Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic” came next, with the audience singing along to every word as Hayley jutted her bright orange microphone out to them with a smile. The band played a great mix of new and old material after this, from the new album’s lead single “Now” to “Pressure,” from their first album All We Know Is Falling. Things slowed down for “The Only Exception” and picked right back up with “Let The Flames Begin.”
The highlight of the show was the band’s performance of “Whoa,” one of their oldest songs. Hayley insisted that the audience sing along to the chorus whether they knew the song or not, joking that “It’s just one word, guys.” The response was overwhelming and the voices of the crowd resonated throughout the Tabernacle.

Hayley dedicated the next song “Anklebiters” to everyone in the audience, and even invited several fans onstage to sing the song with her as long as they knew the words. Hayley explained that the song is about loving yourself and never being afraid to be yourself and that she “needs to remember that every day, and so should you.”

“Still Into You” closed out the show but the fans demanded more. Paramore returned to play “Proof” and they ended with fan-favorite “Brick By Boring Brick” with a ton of confetti shooting out into the crowd.

Set List:

They are a true Americana quartet who mix Rockabilly, Country and a bit of Swing Blues. Led by vocalist Caroline Engel, their versatility is evident to everyone who has seen them perform.

Caroline Engel – dubbed Atlanta’s own “honky-tonk angel” leads this fabulous quartet. Comprised of vocals, electric guitar, slap bass and drums they provide a sound steeped deep in the roots of Americana music.

We got the chance to speak with Caroline herself about their upcoming performance at Tunes from the Tombs. This is what she had to say…

How did Caroline and the Ramblers come to be?

Caroline & the Ramblers started out of a love of classic 1950’s Rock-n-Roll and vintage Country music that I have had ever since childhood. I think it started with my Dad taking me to see Elvis Presley at Atlanta’s Omni Coliseum in 1976.

The current Ramblers – Danny Arana – Guitar, Joel Glogowski – Slap Bass and Mike Z – Drums – have been playing with me for a little over a year. We met in 2011 through the local music scene – via the The Star Bar in Little 5 Points. I am very lucky to be playing with such amazing musicians.

Who are some of your greatest musical influences?

I grew up in a house with a 1960’s Seeburg Jukebox. My Dad had Elvis, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beatles and Bill Hailey 45’s on it – among others. I listened to it all the time. That was my first introduction to classic Rock-n-Roll. When I got a little older – it was all about Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson and Brenda Lee.

What has been your most memorable gig as a band?

I think doing our CD Release party last summer for the release of “Red Hot Mama” was pretty memorable. So much love and support from our friends and fans. Smile…

What is the funniest moment you’ve had as a band?

I guess the funniest moment would have to have been playing outside at the half time show in near freezing weather – for the Atlanta Roller Girls Opening bout of 2013. I think I had on probably 5 layers of clothes – the guys were wearing coats, and gloves (in between songs) and they were also trying to use hand warmers but we were still freezing. Joel our bass player brought a bottle of whiskey he kept passing around and then this couple walked up to us and offered us some Cherry Moonshine (seriously) and we all tasted it. Between the moonshine and the whiskey we were sort of burning after that (at least our throats) – hey I think there’s a song in there! There were a lot of laughs that night.

If you had to describe your music in one word, what would it be?

Rockin’!

What is your dream gig?

The Ryman Auditorium – for sure.

How do you connect with a crowd?

During our set I usually try to give a little backstory about some of our songs. Mainly we just try to put on a good show for folks and leave them wanting more!

What makes you most excited about playing Tunes for the Tombs?

My family and I live a few miles from Historic Oakland Cemetery and we go to their Fall Festival every year. Personally I am excited to be a part of the continued preservation of this Atlanta treasure.

Get your tickets to see Caroline & The Ramblers LIVE at Tunes from the Tombs Saturday, June 8th! This true Americana quartet guarantees a stellar show!

Celebrating the music of the ’80s and ’90s, Old School Saturday events attract over 2,500 “old school” devotees each month to its ever-changing, always swanky locations. We caught up with the people behind this awesome event to discuss the early days of OSS, its most memorable moments and the future.

What encouraged you to create Old School Saturday?

Ten years ago, we noticed the strong crowd reactions at events and parties when the DJs launched their “Old School” music sets. The refreshing detour from the current music was wildly popular and crowd-pleasing. There was a clear demographic out there (including the OSS founders and organizers) that longed for the musical memories from the 1980s and 1990s. The music reminded so many of us of music during our high school days, our college years, and other nostalgic moments in our past. We decided to create an event that was DEDICATED to delivering 100% Old School music—and Old School Saturday (“OSS”) was born.

For those who aren’t familiar with the event, what is Old School Saturday?

Old School Saturday (affectionately known as “OSS”) is a monthly event that celebrates music and memories from the 1980s and 1990s. The events are produced once a month at a variety of high quality venues like The Westin Peachtree Plaza, The Hyatt Regency, The Sheraton Atlanta, and others. Each event draws 2000-2500 persons looking to enjoy their “monthly fix” of great music in an upscale, smoke-free environment (never at night clubs—our crowd appreciates that). Our OSS supporters are proudly known as The “Old School Nation.” Our resident DJs, DJ Tron and DJ LV, are on stage every month delivering a virtual walk down musical memory lane. The tagline sums it up—OSS is all about “The Soundtrack Of Your Life.” We pride ourselves on running a professional operation with PASSIONATE EMPHASIS on the customer experience. Our loyal supporters are the reason why we have thrived and grown over the past 10 years.

What has been one of your most memorable OSS moments?

We have had so many noteworthy moments over the years. We have had guest appearances and performances by Rob Base, DJ E-Z Rock, Kurtis Blow, The Sugar Hill Gang, Whodini, Biz Markie, DJ Nabs, and others. We produced special events with dynamic sound, light, AND VIDEO tributes that have been truly memorable as well. These “special event tributes” were gracious nods of respect to the likes of Michael Jackson, The Notorious BIG, Whitney Houston, Heavy D, Don Cornelious, Soul Train, Tupac, and others.

The big 10-year anniversary hits on May 25th. What are your celebratory plans?

We are actually celebrating all year long. Our celebration includes special guest DJs, prize give-aways, nostalgic looks back at 2003, and other surprises…stay tuned.

What do you want guests to get out of OSS?

We want our Old School Nation to enjoy every aspect of their OSS Experience. That includes our customer service, our staff, our venues, our overall production, our event photos/videos, our online presence, and more. We especially want them to appreciate THE MUSIC. Without a doubt, the music is paramount to one’s OSS Experience. We’ll be humbled and happy if our guests leave OSS and tell their family and friends about their AMAZING TIME enjoying “The Soundtrack Of Their Lives”—and they can’t wait to return. It’s that simple.

Where do you see OSS in the next 10 years?

Stay tuned. We hope to see another 10 years of celebrating great music from yesteryear. We also hope to expand to other markets and bring the “OSS Experience” to other cities nationwide.

Help celebrate Old School Saturday’s 10-year anniversary! Grab your tickets now!

Nicki has filled a void in music with her brand of vintage-tinged rocking country soul — music that’s like an enchanting friend you’ve known for a short while but feels like you’ve known forever. Her warm, strong voice and striking presence have undeniable appeal, confirmed by her sensational performances and rousing reception from music lovers at every show.

We caught up with Nicki and her band, The Gramblers after their set at Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 18. Check out the interview below to learn about Nicki’s greatest musical influences, the band’s favorite song to play and their funniest memory together!

Who do you feel has had a big hand in developing your sound?

Nicki:I think that something we all had in common was our love for a band called Mother Hips from California and also one of their band members is in this band too. It’s just a real California-sounding band and we all really dig it and I think they had a lot of influences that are our influences. A lot of Birds and Buffalo, Dusty Springfield, The Beatles are in there too. Kind of layered on top of that a lot of music from the 70′s, personally, I’m a big fan of the earlier Linda Ronstadt stuff and earlier Bonnie Raitt, Dolly Parton, a lot of women in music during those times. You pick one thing and you dig deeper and deeper until you have a broad spectrum of influences.

What is your favorite song that your most proud of?

Deren Ney: My favorite song is a song called “A Little Too Late” which is sort of the most fun song and I like the lyrics a lot. They are kind of funny and off kilter and it’s our new single. It’s the most unique and natural to our band. It’s our “calling card”.

How do you guys connect to a crowd?

Dave Mulligan: Dance moves. The one nice thing about having Nicki in our band is that she always looks great on stage and the rest of us can just linger in the shadows and no one really notices if we haven’t really showered that day.
Nicki: I do notice.

What is it like being the only girl on tour with all these guys?

Nicki: I have two older brothers so I came kind of prepared. I love them so it helps, even if they smell. I smell too sometimes. It’s all good. We get along really well.

What is the most memorable gig that you guys have played so far?

Nicki: You know, it’s funny because people ask this a lot and I don’t know why but I always say Pocatello, Idaho. Because it just was. We hung out by the river and ate some good ribs & food, no beers (laughs). It’s this big rafting town in the middle of Idaho and every body walks up with these big rafts and inner tubes and we didn’t have those. The boys thought it would be just fine to go down without an inner tube and they all got so worked. Everyone was so sun burnt and banged up and we’re in this rotten place. It wasn’t good but it was the most memorable.

What is the greatest thing a fan has done for you so far?

Nicki: That’s a good question. He’s a fan but he’s also a good friend, he made me this custom wood kazoo with my initials and my name carved into it, which is pretty cool. Sherry made us the canvas van with the cutouts that you can pop your head in.

Do you guys have any pre-show rituals?

Nicki: Usually we’ll drink a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, just one.

If this were the last day on Earth what would you do?

Nicki: I would probably go kiss Tom Petty and jump in the ocean.

Make sure to take a listen to the digital singles, “Little Too Late” and “Ravenous”!

The Features @ The EARL

Hailing from Tennessee, indie-rock quartet, The Features have been releasing music for over a decade. Time may not always make for a great band, but it sure does help. They have played at Bonnaroo, been compared to Manchester Orchestra (Atlanta’s own), and have been featured in Twilight. With their new self-titled album out, the Features have hit the road to share their new music with fans throughout the States.

Check out our exclusive interview with the band!

Ola Podrida @ The Drunken Unicorn

Ola Podrida started out as the recording project of film composer David Wingo but upon moving to NYC in 2006 it became a live band comprised of four of his oldest friends from back home in Texas. While in NYC they were fortunate to share the stage with such bands as Fleet Foxes, Beach House, She & Him, Blitzen Trapper, and many other great bands, culminating in a spot at the Explosions In The Sky curated All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in Minehead UK in 2008. Wingo moved back to Austin in 2009 and Ola Podrida has now morphed into a fully collaborative four-piece band with Matt Clark, David Hobizal and Colin Swietek filling out the lineup. They wrote and recorded their new LP Ghosts Go Blind over 2011 and 2012 and released it on April 30 with Western Vinyl once again.

“The buzz about Ben Deignan is blanketing the metro area like sausage gravy on a big fluffy biscuit. John Mayer was getting this kind of chatter back when he played as a virtual unknown, so catch Deignan on the way up.” -Shane Harrison, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
