Exclusive Interview with Seth Glier: Folk Singer, Grammy Nominee & Philanthropist

Seth Glier first found his passion for singing and songwriting amidst the chaos of the September 11th tragedies back in 2001. “The events of that day we’re running around in my head and I didn’t have an outlet. I didn’t know how to process so I starting writing my thoughts down which ultimately became songs.” Despite all the horrific loss of that day, something beautiful emerged. Since then, Seth has transitioned from opening act, to touring alone, to headlining major folk festivals, to being nominated for a Grammy.

Well I found out via a twitter post that I was nominated so at first I thought it was just a joke. Then my record label called and the whirlwind started. Honestly I didn’t really even get to process the whole experience until I was actually at the Grammys. It was such a humbling & gratifying thing to be walking the red carpet with so many of my musical heroes. A time I will not soon forget.

Seth’s not your typical rock star who let the red carpet get to his head. He is a national spokesperson for Autism Speaks, advocate for Musicians On Call, and even took home the award for Best Social Action Song at the Independent Music Awards for his song, “The Next Right Thing.” The most memorable set he ever played was not at a sold out club or opening for a famous group, but in a clinic amongst HIV patients fighting for their lives.

A few months ago I was volunteering at an HIV clinic in NYC going from room to room, playing some songs for patients there. About 45 minutes into my day I walked into a man’s room. He looked pretty down and he asked me if I knew any Beatles songs. I started playing let it be on my guitar and singing quietly….to my surprise he started singing along. It reminded me of how healing music truly is. After all the career talk with management & my drive to take my music to a larger audience, this man reminded me what the meaning of music truly is. The purpose of music is to simply make the listener feel a little less alone in the world.

For an audience who has never had a chance to enjoy Seth’s music, imagine inspiration pooled from classic songwriters of the 70’s. Glier longs to write music that lasts the test of time like Billy Joel, Jackson Brown, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor. “I want to create something that generations can relate to man years from now. I also wan to tell stories. I love pop music, but I think it can be so much more in content than it currently is.”

Don’t miss your chance to let Seth Glier’s passion and inspiration for his lyrics rub off on you when he stops by Eddie’s Attic with Eric Baker this Thursday, April 24th. Doors at 6:30 p.m. GA tickets are $12 in advance, $16 at the door. Table seats are $15 and must be purchased in multiples of 4.
