With their steady ebb and flow of warm, effects-laden sounds, northern California’s Whirr (Formerly Whirl) give the sounds of 90s shoegaze a widescreen update for the post-millennial era. The young sextet’s walls of lush guitars, breathy vocals, dreamy synth and thunderous drumming propel listening ears into a near-cinematic realm where instantly catchy melodies and emotional, enveloping atmospheres hang perfectly in the balance.

We caught up with Nick Bassett of the band before they head to the Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta tomorrow! Check out what he had to say about the band’s crazy memories together, their new name and how they write music!

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you or at your show?

Emailing me asking how exactly I make my guitar sound so swirly.

What is the funniest moment you have had as band so far?

Almost getting sued by an idiot woman who looks like a man in a Sheryl Crow costume.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Not really.

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?

Loud.

How do you connect with a crowd?

Blaring sound into their ears.

How did you come up with your band name?

It was Whirl then we got a lawsuit and had to change it to Whirr.

What is the best way to write music?

Ripping off other bands.

Catch Whirr with Nothing playing at the Drunken Unicorn Thursday, August 8!
