By Ellen Eldridge

Boston-based Della Mae founder Kimber Ludiker searched for multi-talented, multi-faceted young women with their instruments, blended them together so that their musical and background differences would melt into a deliciously melodic brew, and then threw them into Cash Cabin Studio along with masters Bryan Sutton and Paul Q. Kolderie to bring about the debut release, This World Oft Can Be (Rounder Records).

Although the musicians’ sublime skills have already won them numerous individual honors, the album’s focus is squarely on the band’s emotionally potent songs and spirited, effortlessly expressive performances.

Celia Woodsmith, vocalist for Della Mae, took the time to answer our questions before the show at Eddie’s Attic on Sunday June 30.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

The first show I vividly remember took place when I was 10 years old. It was Fiona Apple promoting her Tidal record; I still know all the lyrics to those songs!

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

The best show I have ever performed was probably for a small group of Pakistani and Afghan street children in a park in Islamabad, Pakistan. They had never seen our traditional musical instruments before, and the little girls loved touching and strumming the strings. Being able to give confidence to those little girls is something that has changed the way I look at the power of performance.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

There are far too many to choose from, but in 2011 I saw John Prine play at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. His honesty, quirky lyrics and the overwhelming joy of the crowd made the whole experience one to remember. Yes, I cried during at least three songs.

Gig you would most like to play?

Prairie Home Companion, I’ve listened to that show my whole life and NPR is on constantly in my kitchen.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Fronting “The Band” with Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin as special guests.
