Music Man: Fishing Season

I listen to music for a living. It’s rad…but not always.

Ever go fishing when you were younger? I did, and I liked it a lot, except on the days when there was absolutely nothing in the lake, those days were pure boredom. But on a good day, fishing could be amazing (even though most of those days were reserved for my friends). My job can be like that sometimes. There are days, and even weeks when I’ll be out looking and listening for great new music, or a great live band, and I’ll find nothing–zilch. Then there are those times when it seems that all I find is greatness. Days or weeks when a great song, an album, or live show will cross my path in multiples, I love those times. This has been one of those weeks, and it’s only Wednesday. For the most part, the bands are finding me this time too, and so my job has been made even easier then it already was…a pretty tough feat mind you.

A band from Lakeland reached out to me earlier in the week to let me know they were playing Atlanta that night (thanks for the notice), I couldn’t make the show, but I checked out their music anyway, and I loved it. They’re called Mouse Fire, check them out if you want to hear a cool mix of Arcade Fire and Death Cab. They return to Atlanta to play the Drunken Unicorn on September 28th, and I’ll be there with bells on (proper notice this time)..next, a buddy of mine alerted me via Myspace about a singer song-writer from Miami (that’s what I said too, but stay with me, it’s actually good) called Rachel Goodrich.

For fans of Amy Winehouse, but maybe a little more granola (she actually plays the kazoo for crying out loud)–ok, a lot more granola-really cool sound, very refreshing. The stand out track is Little Brass Bear…Atlanta’s own Ponderosa have a new song called Pennyless, and I’ve been obsessing over it ever since they sent it my way on Monday. If you’re not familiar with these guys, you should make an effort to see them or at least hear them sometime soon….great band, great songs, great live show.

Finally, Atlanta’s road warriors Manchester Orchestra have released a sneak preview of their forthcoming EP (10/7) on their Myspace page. I Was A Lid is pretty amazing, enough said.
So there you have it, four awesome artists in three days, not a bad week at the lake…

I leave for England tomorrow, hopefully I’ll find some hidden gems over there to tell you about upon my return…

Current Listening: Manchester Orchestra "I Was A Lid" Ponderosa "Pennyless"
Rachel Goodrich "Little Brass bear" Mouse Fire "Chicago Aint the Answer"
