Picture Book: Death Cab for Cutie at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, August 11

By Catrina Maxwell

Indie crossovers Death Cab for Cutie played to a sweaty but energetic crowd of giddy fans on Thursday night. The band played a packed set that saw them try out some new tracks from their latest release, Codes and Keys, including the “VH1 Storytellers”-featured song “You Are A Tourist,” which was warmly accepted by fans as a new Death Cab standard.

The gig was an extra-festive affair, with it being the birthday of the band’s fearless leader, Ben Gibbard. Gibbard was extra-chatty, mentioning to a shirtless guy in the crowd that the show was rated PG-13. Gibbard then had the crowd confirm that the guy had his pants on and asked him to please keep his pants on as this was a family event and laughed. The crowd was really getting into the birthday spirit with birthday balloons being thrown up on stage as well as the random scream of “Happy birthday!” from the audience.
