Q&A With Sugar & The Hi Lows; Playing Eddie’s Attic, Monday Dec. 10th

Ringing in their new sound, Sugar & The Hi Lows are bringing back the era of feel good music, the days when one take as enough and an auto-tune was a thing you did to your ’55 Chevy. Brought to life by experienced songwriter/performers Trent Dabbs and Amy Stroup, Sugar & The Hi Lows is a bit of a nostalgic love offering. With more than 100 TV placements between the two of them, Dabbs and Stroup are certainly no strangers to pop culture, but they’ve chosen to step away from their traditional singer-songwriter sound to pursue something with more of a swing. They joined us for a little Q&A before their show tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you? or at your show?

Most of our fans have been awesome…but people do some strange things on the Internet. I had a fan from India email several times via facebook and give me his number asking me to call him and wish him goodnight.

What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist/band so far?

Hot Sauce contests.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

I like when Trent gives the band a pep talk speech like we are on Friday night lights about to win state.

How do you connect with a crowd?

Sincerity and telling the truth … I think when you do that people connect.

How did you come up with your band name?

My dad growing up called me ‘Amy Sugar’ and Trent has always wanted a band named The Hi-Lows. It made sense to put two together.

What is the best way to write music?

For me, some essentials are a good lightning, white walls, hard wood floors, coffee, dark chocolate covered almonds, and old guitars. Mentally, I think it’s best not to over think things or take yourself too seriously. I had a writer friend tell me, ‘Dare to be stupid’… I think it’s true you can’t write from a place of fear, or worried about not being cool enough. It seems like telling the truth and being yourself works best.

Check out Suga & the Hi-Lows tonight at Eddie’s Attic!
