Show Preview: Black Lips w/ The King Khan & BBQ Show @ Goat Farm Arts Center 10/4

Black Lips

Hailing from Atlanta, GA – Dunwoody, to be exact – The Black Lips were formed in 1999 by guitarists Cole Alexander and Ben Ederbaugh, and bassist Jared Swilley. Alexander and Swilley started off their punk-rock personas at an early age and were kicked out of school during their senior year after the Columbine Massacre due to the fact that they were viewed as a “subculture danger.”

15 years later, the band has come a long way through many ups and downs, but always willing to play a good show. The Black Lips are rounding up their tour in support of their latest album, Underneath the Rainbow, this Saturday at The Goat Farm (if you haven’t checked out The Goat Farm yet, do it!). Underneath the Rainbow is their first full length album in three years and was released on March 18th under longtime label Vice Records. Recorded over the course of 2013 at a variety of locations, the twelve songs come with a list full of studio collaborators that is quite impressive.

After letters to incarcerated studio legend Phil Spector to produce went unanswered the band convened at Dunham Studios in New York to record initial tracks with Dap Kingsmusic director Tommy Brenneck (Cee Lo, Charles Bradley). The group then decamped to Nashville to record several songs with Patrick Carney of The Black Keys producing, finally rounding out the album with a couple of songs co-produced with lifetime Lips recording collaborator,Ed Rawls. The resultant collection was mixed by Grammy winner Jimmy Douglass (Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Björk) and features artwork shot by legendary photographer Mick Rock (David Bowie, Queen, Lou Reed).

Needless to say, the new album is definitely worth a listen (on repeat recommended) and their live show at The Goat Farm should not be missed!

Tickets are $20. Doors open at 7:30pm. Online, phone and outlet sales close at 4pm on the day of the show.
