Bits and Bobs: Gogol Bordello, Mumford & Sons, Andre 3000, Noot D’Noot, David Cross, Johnny Marr

- The Buckhead Theatre just announced two more great shows for the fall. Gypsy punks Gogol Bordello play on October 7 (on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.) and England’s favorite folk rockers at the moment Mumford & Sons play November 7 (on sale Friday at 10 a.m.)

- Famed music photographer Michael Schmelling is releasing a new book called Atlanta in November. It’ll capture the Atlanta hip-hop scene and will feature established folks like Outkast as well as up-and-comers. The book will also have a collection of interviews with the likes of Andre 3000, Big Boi, Gucci Mane, Ludacris and more.

- If you haven’t had a chance to buy your copy of the recently-released sophomore album from Noot D’Noot, then head on over to Ohmpark and have a listen to From Ever Since, and then buy it.

- Local-lad-done-good David Cross has wrapped up a new series for IFC called “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret,” which also stars his “Arrested Development” co-star Will Arnett. The show basically does what it says on the tin; the lead character, Todd Margaret (played by Cross), meanders through life making bad choices. Hilarity (and much cringing) ensues. Zap2it has some good quotage from David Cross. You can check out more clips on the IFC website, including the theme tune, “Life is Sweet” by Johnny Marr. The show starts October 1.

April 22, 2010 Gigs No Comments
500 Songs For Kids at Smith’s Olde Bar, April 29 – May 8

500 Songs For Kids (songsforkidsfoundation.org) has become more than just an annual event; it’s officially an Atlanta institution. The 10-night fundraiser brings together an enormous music community to raise funds for various children’s hospitals, treatment centers, special needs camps and all places where kids are in need.

Hundreds of local, regional and national touring musicians are scheduled to perform at Smith’s Olde Bar, each performing one song from the 500 Greatest Era-Defining Songs of All Time, a special list crafted for this amazing organization.

Our friends at Mixtape Atlanta have been posting daily updates with this year’s performer announcements, as well as highlights from last year. Some great bands have been confirmed including Ponderosa, Dead Confederate, The Coathangers, Young Orchids, The Yacht Rock Revue, Modern Skirts and many, many more. Past years have included special performances by Cee-Lo, Butch Walker, Gavin DeGraw, Arrested Development, Angie Aparo, Pete Yorn, Mute Math, and Cracker.

10-day passes, which is are the only guaranteed entrance to the coveted final night, are available online.

Individual day passes are also available online.

Atlanta’s Dogwood Festival – April 16, 17 and 18

Atlanta’s Dogwood Festival – April 16, 17 and 18

The sun is shinning, feet are flip-flopping and the pollen count has reached new levels of ridiculous. Atlanta, it’s springtime!

With the wonderful warm weathered season comes the first outdoor festival of the year that doesn’t require sitting under heat lamps – the 74th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival.

Aside from the tasty treats, adult beverages and guaranteed good times we’ll be having at the Friends of Dogwood Pavillion, we’re especially excited for the bands at Dogwood this weekend. Electro-funk ensemble Noot d’ Noot headlines on Friday, old-schoolers Soulphonics & Ruby Velle and The Forty-Fives take the stage Saturday night, and pop singer Ben Deignan holds it down on Sunday. We recommend bringing comfortable dancing shoes.

CD Review: Them Crooked Vultures — Them Crooked Vultures; Playing The Tablernacle, February 11

February 11, 2010 CD Reviews, Gigs 1 Comment
By Eileen Tilson

Riddle me this:  What do you get when you combine the mystic force of Led Zeppelin, the fierceness of the Foo and Nirvana, and the sexy swagger of Queens of the Stone Age? A band so powerful, you will need a stiff drink to swallow this pill. Put on you dirtiest tongue for Them Crooked Vultures, the blending of John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme.

Resumes aside, the music here is not rocket science, and although the term “supergroup” has been dropped on several occasions, within seconds of listening to the album, it is clear that these are three extremely talented musicians (and even better friends) who decided it would be really fun to start a band. Ironically, Dave Grohl unknowingly predestined the band five years ago, when he was making the Foo Fighters album In Your Honor. Both Homme and Jones played on the album, and when Mojo Magazine asked what was next for Dave, he jokingly replied  “Well, I am gonna start a band with John Paul Jones and Josh Homme, cause who wouldn’t want to be in a band with them.” It wasn’t until after Grohl saw the Led Zeppelin reunion show in NYC four years later, that his premonition was realized. … Continue Reading

Testimonials
“I have had major record label reps come to me requesting information about Echovalve from your site. I do believe in it and you!” – Scarlett Lopez, manager of Echovalve

“Since advertising and working with AMG I have seen an average of a 30% increase in unique visitors to my site and a 65% increase in page views. The Atlanta Music Guide is by far the best marketing tool in my bag and I thank them for all of the hard work they do, but to just see the statistics without seeing the people working there is like seeing The Earl without seeing the Newcastle. They believe in what they are doing and believe in Atlanta to the core of their being. I know that my relationship with them does not end with a web banner. They get out from behind the computers and attend every major, and minor, music event going on in this town and while they are out they talk about their sponsors and further increase our reach in this city. My motto is; “Whatever AMG needs, AMG gets.” – Zack Arias of Usedfilm.com
