You guys really are spoiled for choice this weekend. The city’s hip older sibling is hosting a little shindig with some college rock legends, while the still-cool but much-older uncle spoils ale lovers rotten with a sold-out craft beer extravaganza. And between all that, there’s a ton of kick-ass rock shows to boot. Choose wisely, and have fun! … Continue Reading

AMG Weekend Picks: Wilco, Battle of the Burgers, Bryan Ferry and More!

What a weekend! There’s celebrations of the city’s best, new wave heroes, and a few extra-special festivals too. And with the unbearable heat long gone (knock on wood), we can run around the city all day and all night and not worry about melting into the pavement. So go forth and rock out! … Continue Reading

Believe it or not, summer is supposedly winding down to a close. Weird, because it still feels like the middle of the hellish hot season. But we can dream of cooler days. And this weekend is a perfect way to look forward to the fall, with some uber-summeresque parties and outdoor gigs. … Continue Reading

5 GB With Guster & Jack’s Mannequin; Playing Chastain Amphitheater TONIGHT

By Eileen Tilson

Boston alternative band, Guster, has maintained their staying power since their 1995 release of Parachute, due to their relentless loyalty to their fans. More than a decade late, the band is continuing to entertain their fans by doing things like sneak previewing songs from their On the Ocean EP on turntable.fm. Following their footsteps, Jack’s Mannequin is active in giving back with their foundation, the Dear Jack Foundation, which aims to raise awareness and support organizations and charities that research treatments and improve quality of life for young adults. We spoke with both David from Guster and Andrew from Jack’s Mannequin before their show tonight at Chastain Amphitheater.

What is the the first gig you ever went to?

G:  I saw Air Supply on a revolving stage in Connecticut when I was 10 years old.  I was screaming “All Out of Love” the whole time, and was paranoid that they weren’t going to play it.  They played it as the last song of their encore.  I still feel the sweet sweet relief of that moment every time I hear the song  (or sing it with Will Forte).

JM: Billy Joel! It was in Cleveland, I think I was like in the 5th grade. It was a Christmas present from my parents, and we were in the 20th row! … Continue Reading

-WARNING READ THIS ONLY IF YOU ARE ABOUT TO HIT PUBERTY: the kids of Buckhead will be getting a treat tonight as their dark haired Cosmo girl Selena Gomez struts her stuff across the stage at Chastain Ampitheater.

-Miller Lite is hosting its own concert series at Smith’s Olde Bar, and tonight they will be showcasing Crystal Stafford, American Anodyne, and The Jarheads.

-Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll BABY! Dirty South Trivia is all over the city like a bad_________, batch of cologne.

-Finally, for all of us old-school 99X-ers, legendary DJ Steve Craig, will be taking over 92.9 DAVE FM tonight from 8 – 10 p.m., spinning those ’90s college tunes that inspired all the current hit-makers. Be sure to call and say hello!

What’s Up Wednesday?

July 27, 2011 Gigs No Comments

If you live in the City of Atlanta and love music, you have absolutely NO reason not to be at one of the amazing shows going on tonight!

-It will be a night of whiskey-fueled debauchery at Aaron’s Lakewood Amphitheater tonight, as the Kings of Leon rock it out with the Band of Horses. And seeing as how they just finished touring together, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple of members of the Zac Brown Band there as well… hell, I’d be willing to bet they jump on stage!

-There is a huge neo-retro music scene happening, but head over to Chastain Ampitheater for the originals. The Temptations and The Four Tops will be doo-whopping it into the early morn.

-Smith’s Olde Bar is going to set the stage for the start of the tour for new jam-band super-group, Trigger Hippy, which includes heavy hitters, Joan Osborne and Steve Gorman (Black Crowes). Make sure and check out the interview we did a couple of days ago, where Steve talks of seeing Prince in robe, at 5 a.m.

-Always ones for  putting on great shows, The Masquerade has a multitude of entertainment tonight from progressive metal band Animals as Leaders, to Kings of Leon Jr.-esque The Weeks.

-Atlanta band Turf War will be filling the air in East Atlanta at The EARL, with their southern Springsteen-influenced punk. Their debut album is expected to drop this fall on Old Flame Records.

-And last but not least! If you are just feeling like doing something a little more mellow, join the Ticket Alternative crew for our Street Food Happy Hour, in the TA parking lot. There will be food and beer (provided by Wild Heaven), and there will be music from Dave Daniels and the PTA. Check out the Facebook Invite for more info.

AMG Weekend Picks: Emmylou Harris, The Whiskey Gentry, Archers of Loaf and More!

Looks like that the brief respite from the unbearable heat last weekend was just that – brief. We’re plunging back into the unyielding mugginess. Thankfully there are some amazing gigs to keep you cool with AC, or at least keep you distracted with legendary tunes. … Continue Reading
