Happy first day of December! ‘Tis the Season to do fun stuff! Tonight there is a sleigh full of activities to do, so pick one and get your booty out there!

-Carolina soul man, Anthony Hamilton, is gracing us with his presence at Center Stage, but hopefully you bought in advance, cause this show is sold out!

-Over at The Earl,  it’s a triple whammy with Cory Branan and special guests, Ben Trickey and The Meeks Family.

-My favorite little darling, and former The Voice contestant, Rebecca Loebe will be captivating crowds at Eddie’s Attic as part of the Arlington Priest’s Holiday Show!

-You know that guy with the curly hair who raises a bunch of money for children’s charities every year? No, I am talking about Ronald McDonald! Our dear friend Josh Rifkind will be playing with Justin Kerenyi and Sanjay Kothari as part of their Songs For Kids Foundation at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-For the tween in us all ( or at least where we hope they are being dropped off!) Demi Lavato and We the Kings will be hoping not to split their skinny jeans at the Cobb Energy Centre.

-If whiplash is what you are looking for, catch Staind at The Tabernacle, where there surely will be some disgruntled folks.

-The residency continues for Canada’s The Trews who will be rocking it out in the Atlanta Room in Smith’s Olde Bar.

-The Breeze Kings have won Creative Loafing’s Best Blues Band in Atlanta award eight years in a row, and were top 10 finalists at the 2005 IBC competition in Memphis, Tenn. See them for a FREE SHOW at The Northside Tavern.

Before I tell you about all the awesome happenings in Atlanta tonight, please forgive me for the inconsistency of posts! I know I have been all over the place lately, but computers are back up and running, and we should be right back on track! So without further ado, here are some awesome musical events to keep you entertained tonight.

-The Queen Bee of the 80′s, Cyndi Lauper, will be having a whole lot of fun at the Cobb Energy Centre tonight.

-Oh, and tonight at The Earl, Charlotte’s own Benji Hughes will be doing it up right. You might remember some of his songs from hit shows like  90210 and How I Met Your Mother. With a new record out, this is a show not to be missed!

-Everyone’s fave Perez Hilton approved celebrity boyfriend, turned Coy-friend, Ryan Cabrera is showing his softer side tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-One of my FAVORITE nights in Atlanta, is at Eddie’s Attic tonight. The ATL Collective presents the Beatles Revolver, featuring performances from Death on Two Wheels, Micah Dalton, and Molly Parden.

-There are some talented singer/songwriters playing tonight at Wonderroot. If you find yourself in the West End tonight, make sure and check out Allison Weiss, Bess Rogers, Places To Hide, Night Driving in Small Towns.

-Canadian pop duo, PS I Love You will be fuzz popping it up at the 529. Joining them will be Mood Rings and Red Sea.

We are almost to the weekend!

-It’s day two at the Cobb Energy Centre with alt rockers, Wilco. They are joined by the legendary Nick Lowe, so if you missed last night’s show, be sure to try and make this one.

-One of the most buzzed about bands from other bands I have heard about lately, Shovel and Rope, is playing at The Earl tonight. Led by the soulful husband and wife duo Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, this show will be a musician haven.

-You may have heard Matthew Mayfield’s music in Grey’s Anatomy, and you can check out this singer songwriter tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog have declared Kendrick Lamar the “new king of the West.” Catch this rapper tonight at The Masquerade, joined by Dom Kennedy.

-I became a fan of Explosions in the Sky, after hearing them on Elbow radio on Pandora. Their music is ethereal and they are playing at The Tabernacle tonight.

As I write this I am currently recovering from a fun night with my closest ones, and the thought of going out tonight seems rather exhausting, but if you are feeling frisky tonight, here are some great things for you to do.

-Tonight starts the two day shows at the Cobb Energy Center for the ever so awesome Wilco, and with Nick Lowe joining them, you definitely don’t want to miss these.

-Prog rockers, Umphrey’s McGee will be jam banding it up at The Tabernacle.

-With his new What Were You Hoping For?, Van Hunt employs a spare but dizzyingly vibrant meld of day-glo psychedelic soul laced with glammed-up riffs and the acerbic energy of punk. Check him tonight at The Earl.

-It takes a certain type of musician to hop freight trains and barrel across the vastness of North America with his brother and cousin.  Especially for an artist who, just years before, sold out Madison Square Garden for three consecutive nights. Chad “Chadwick” Stokes is anything but a typical rock star. Check him out tonight at The Loft.

-For an awesome night of Blues, definitely head over to Eddie’s Attic to catch local fave, Joe McGuiness as he plays with Casey Dresissen and the Colorfools.

Well, summer’s last full month is officially over. And while we actually have a few more weeks left of the season, the feeling of cooler things to come is already in the air. The heat is just a little less oppressive. Kids are back in school. Fall fashions are hitting us over the head. And Labor Day weekend is upon us. Which means things are a little more mellow this weekend (barely an on-sale to be found, for example), but there is still plenty to do around town.

AMG Weekend Picks: Tears for Fears, Oryx and Crake, Who’s Bad, Billy Idol and More

Looks like the temperatures are coming down just a tiny bit, which means this weekend will be much more bearable and you should be getting out to even more shows now that there’s less fear of melting into the pavement. So we’ve got a nice little selection of outdoor gigs, as well as some great club gigs for those who still aren’t quite ready to deal with non-air conditioned spaces. And we also have a slew of on-sales, which just goes to prove that this fall is going to be a whole bunch of music madness, and we can’t wait. … Continue Reading

Bits & Bobs: Interpol, Garrison Keillor, Miniature Tigers, Trailer Vic’s Beach Party, Sufjan Stevens and More!

- As you may have noticed in our Weekend Picks post, Interpol are bringing moody dark synths and guitars to The Tabernacle on November 1 and Metric will be coming on October 28.

- For those who like their twee stories of cold states in America told in a slow, thoughtfully-measured way, Garrison Keillor is coming to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on November 17.

- The EARL is gearing up for Trailer Vic’s (the folks from Drive Invasion) Beach Party on September 5. There will be a for-reals beach set up with a pool, cocktails and music from the likes of Walk the Plank (outside, poolside) and Laramie Dean, The Forty-Fives, Grinder Nova and more.

- Team Luis is gearing up for a killer new night this Thursday called Thursday Deluxe, which takes the place of Pop Death Squad’s Big Trouble in Little Five Points. The inaugural night will feature the sounds of Brain Box, Good Night Insomniacs (with A Fight to the Death acting as backing band) and The Terror. It’s at Star Bar and it’s free. Sweet. The next night Star Bar will host yet another Team Luis show, this time with Miniature Tigers, killer Atlanta rockers Young Orchids and Lera Lynn. Ticket link for this show and posters are below.

AMG Weekend Picks: Athens PopFest, Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun, Rosanne Cash, Kathy Griffin, Dragonette

We’ve got some great heavy hitters coming to Georgia this weekend.
