February 2, 2012 Gigs 1 Comment

Happy Super Bowl Weekend everyone! Looks like the weekend might be a bit quiet due to everyone revving up their eating and drinking engines for the big game on Sunday, but we still have some killer gigs to take the edge off if you’re not into the whole pigskin thing, with a healthy amount of metal thrown in for good measure. … Continue Reading

AMG Weekend Picks: O’Brother, Olivia Tremor Control, Judi Chicago and More!

January 5, 2012 Gigs 2 Comments

It’s a pretty quiet weekend as the city – nay, the world – struggles to come to terms with a new year and the end of the holidays, and possibly the tail-end of a New Year’s Eve hangover. So, much of what we have to recommend for this weekend is more on the quiet side, with a little spice from some serious punks and rockers thrown in for good measure if you are ready to get back on that horse already. … Continue Reading

What’s Up Tuesday?

December 13, 2011 Atlanta Music News No Comments

By Eileen Tilson/ @tktalt_tn

I’m not sure what it is, but I really do like Tuesdays. I am not sure if maybe it is because that was always Music Day in the Catholic elementary school I went or not, but I sure do think Tuesdays can sometimes get a bad wrap. So let’s show Tuesday a little love today shall we?

-It doesn’t hurt that the four ladies in Texas’ The Trishas are pretty, but don’t just judge these girls by their looks alone, they got some gee-tars and they know how to use them. See them tonight at Eddie’s Attic with The Wrights.

-The world’s most republican-esque heavy metal rocker, Alice Cooper, is trading in his golf shoes for his elaborately dark music tonight at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

-If you are really wanting to feel the holiday spirit tonight then head on down to the Gwinnett Arena for Star 94′s Jingle Jam featuring Daughtry, the Script, Big Time Rush, Matt Nathanson, and Parachute.

-Cleveland dream poppers, Mr Gnome, will be mesmerizing artsy hipsters at The 529.

-VNV Nation will be holding court in Heaven at The Masquerade.

Live Review & Picture Book: Puscifer at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, November 30

Review and photos by Ellen Eldridge

The key to success as a musician, over a period of a decade or more, lies in the need to constantly reinvent oneself. Everyone seated in the Cobb Energy Centre on Wednesday night understood the principles that Maynard James Keenan follows for his art, especially once his video montage from past Puscifer performances, played in-between Carina Round’s opening act and the main show, transitioned into his welcoming warning about no flash photography. Maynard’s menagerie of characters includes a Pattonesque soldier standing drunk before an American flag telling the crowd to verify the text on the ticket stub, and bullies them with a round of verbal mortar to remind them he thinks flash photography is rude and distracting. Many fans who have attended Puscifer shows have seen this skit before and will attest to the staff walking about the arena attempting to arrest anyone caught recording the show.

Picture Book & Live Review: Tori Amos at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, November 29

Review and photos by Ellen Eldridge

Tori Amos spoke to me when I was 16. Not directly, but from the stage when another fan shouted, “I love you Tori!” Her return quip, “Where were you when I was 16?” instantly won me on her personality. Her persistent passion guided me through my own formative years, deeply impacting my own writing and thought patterns. During the time Amos’ own experimentation pulled away from the piano to entertain with a backing rock band, on albums like From the Choirgirl Hotel, I conducted my own experimentation in college, and pretty well lost touch with the songwriter. I certainly didn’t realize the amount of material I missed, and from Scarlet’s Walk through Midwinter Graces I’d probably only heard every other album released, and not even in full. After reviewing Night of Hunters, I felt reconnected with my idol, and after Tuesday night’s show at Cobb Energy Centre I feel my love for her resurrected.

What’s Up Wednesday?

Hello city of Atlanta! So let’s be honest, how many of you already have your Christmas decorations up? I can’t help but to laugh at the amount of folks that cannot even wait till December before putting up their holiday lights! But it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and that means there will be much joying to do. Here is your Hump Day agenda.

-Maynard James Keenan, of Tool and A Perfect Circle fame, brings his Puscifer project  to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in support of his new album, Conditions of My Parole.

-Hailing from the same New Jersey town that produced Matt Pinfield, New Brunswick’s own, Thursday, will be at The Loft tonight.

-Check out Atlanta rockers, The Pinx, tonight at The Earl. Joining them will be The Higher Choir.

-Started in the summer of 2010, the Atlanta Funk Society brought together a collection of some of the best musicians Atlanta had to offer. See them live tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-For $5 it is a steal to check out the Husseins who are playing the 529 with Last Years Men and Factory North.

-Gotta love some Joe McGuinness! Go see his awesomeness live with his trio at Blind Willies.

5GB With Thomas Dybdahl; Playing W/ Tori Amos At Cobb Energy Centre Tonight

November 29, 2011 5 Gig Bytes, Gigs 1 Comment

By Eileen Tilson/ @tktalt_tn

I remember hearing about Thomas Dybdahl when Leslie Fram received his CD at WRXP in NYC. She gave me the CD, and said “Listen to this, you will love it.” Well, she was right. Within the first few songs of listening to the Norwegian singer/songwriter I was hooked. Like Scandinavia’s version of Jeff Buckley, Dybdahl captivates his listeners. We chatted with him as part of our 5 GB series before his show tonight with Tori Amos.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

A local band from Stavanger, Norway called The September When. They were spectacular and pretty big in Norway at the time. They did the job: I wanted to be an artist from then!

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

I think maybe the concert hall called Salle Pleyel in Paris would be one of the hightlights up till now. Played there this spring with a string orchestra, unbelievable room.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

I think Radiohead at Roskilde Festival in 97 (Ok Computer tour) was one of the top ones. Amazing band, 60,000 people just disappeared. It was just me and them!

Gig you would most like to play?

A solo show at Carnegie Hall is veeery high on the list!

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

It would be Carnegie Hall, with “Friends” :)

Catch Thomas Dybdahl tonight, Nov.29 at Cobb Energy Centre

Happy Tuesday y’all! Well there is definitely not that much going on in Atlanta tonight! However, if you do feel like taking a little gander outside, here are some events worth checking out.

-The Queen of the Keys is back! And she is kicking off her first tour in years right here in our fine city. Tori Amos will be playing a packed out show tonight at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

-Remember, Eddie’s Attic changed the dates and are hosting their Songwriter Open Mic Night tonight!

-Check out Young Buffalo at The Masquerade, along with Slowwriter and The Claymores.

And honestly that’s about all. Now go enjoy your day!

What were you expecting? TOOL?! The biggest reason anyone should give Puscifer a chance isn’t because this is another Tool or A Perfect Circle. Puscifer, much like Caduceus Cellars, channels a new catharsis for Maynard James Keenan, a man striving to continually reinvent himself; not for his fans, but for his self. … Continue Reading

Bon Iver
Bon Iver
Jagjaguar

By Al Kaufman

Most fans know the story by now. Justin Vernon, a sensitive (bearded, naturally) guy from Wisconsin holed himself up in a cabin in the woods with his guitar and wrote a painstakingly beautiful and intimate album about a break-up. He gave himself the moniker Bon Iver, a variation of the French bon hiver, which means “good winter.” For Emma, Forever Ago caught the ears of Kanye West, who asked Vernon to contribute his vocals from his song “Woods” to “Lost In the World.” A star was born. … Continue Reading
