Don’t Refer to Them as the “Come Back Kids!” Avant-Pop Trio OMNI Takes Lo-Fi to An Aesthetically Beautiful Place, With Debut LP Deluxe: My One-On-One With Co-Founder/Lead Singer Philip Frobos

Home to nearly 5.6 million residents, Atlanta is somewhat of a seething metropolis still searching for its’ unique identity, akin to an adolescent claiming that, “who they are today, is what they will be tomorrow.” With so many people relocating to Atlanta, the city has an unearthly way of feeling like this “adolescent metropolis” will one day soon spontaneously combust from within. From deep within this mantle lies a “cultural pressure cooker” that has often times produced rare gems. These rarities have been presented to me, in the form of great local musicians and the foreigners that have now claimed Atlanta as their musical hub. One such band, that I was graciously granted the opportunity to chat with is Atlanta’s own, Avant-Pop trio OMNI.  OMNI is the offspring of best buds Philip Frobos (lead singer/bass), Frankie Broyles (guitar) and […]

Live Tunes for Tuesday 6/17

Bas @ Vinyl  Not the typical motivational charge or coming-of-age story. Then again, there’s very little typical about Parisian export turned Queens expert Bas, the first artist signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville imprint, a label partnership with Interscope Records. The multilingual Bas, who’s been ably accompanying Cole on tour, fires his first official shot across […]

Interview: St. Paul and the Broken Bones- Playing @ The Earl August 3rd!

[ 0 ] August 1, 2013 |

Paul Janeway, of St. Paul and the Broken Bones, is a young man who began wailing straight out of the womb, and most folks would agree that he hasn’t stopped since. He began singing in church, stretching those vocal cords with an eye toward becoming a man of the cloth. As it turns out, however, […]

Tour Talk with the Blank Tapes; Playing the Earl Tuesday, June 25

[ 0 ] June 24, 2013 |

By Jhoni Jackson Matt Adams’ musical yield is exceptional, like a less eccentric, younger R. Stevie Moore, who he actually shared bills with in Europe a few years ago. Still, the output is freakish. Since first releasing tunes as The Blank Tapes in 2005, he’s amassed hundreds of recordings. (Many collections are available via Bandcamp.) […]

5GB Interview: Shannon and the Clams – playing The Earl June 23

[ 0 ] June 21, 2013 |

What started as an open mic project for a shy, young Shannon Shaw (vocals, bass), to try out some tunes ended with the Clams’ meeting and forming a band, Shannon and the Clams, comprised of Shaw, Cody Blanchard (vocals, guitar) and Ian Amberson (drums, vocals). Haunting yet beautiful growls emanate from the band’s two lead […]

One thing you need to know is that like many great bands that have stuck around for a decade or more, Kylesa defies convention, categorization and they are constantly evolving. This individualism, among other places, can also be found as an ongoing theme in the lyrics of Kylesa’s two core, founding members, Phillip Cope and […]

CD Review: Misery Loves Chachi – Long Live the Lazy Choir

[ 0 ] June 11, 2013 |

By Ellen Eldridge Nathan Sadler, the musical voice behind Misery Loves Chachi, spent more than three years experimenting and commiserating among his keyboards to compose 25 songs, of which four tracks representing the lighter and more hopeful side of displacement and unemployment emerged. These four songs are being released today (June 11) as the debut […]
