What’s Up Tuesday?

Bon Matin Atlanta! So, for better or worse, I judge my day by  the first song that comes on my Sirius XM channel…if it is something like Blink 182, I know I’m in for one of those days. Today, fortunately it was the little ditty above; I hope that it starts your Tuesday out right as well….

-Eddie’s Attic is certainly making it’s rounds this week! Tonight, songstresses, Neulore and Audrey Assad will be enchanting their audience.

-After three albums under the name RTX, Jennifer Herrema and her bunch decided to flip the script, to kick open the doors of perception a little bit . Black Bananas are at 529 tonight.

-The Live X series has found a new home in Hooters (obviously a Mike Kee doing…) and they are presenting 90′s rockers, Eve 6, before their show tonight at the Masquerade.

What’s Up Monday?

So how did you all survive? Anyone do anything crazy this weekend? OK, don’t answer that….Check out what’s happening tonight in Atlanta.

-Have you checked out one of the 500 Songs for Kids yet? Every cool band in the state of Georgia is participating in this awesome cause, so go out to Smith’s Olde Bar and support!

-Pat Grossi, aka Active Child, has toured with many notable acts of differing genres, including dubstep producer James Blake, dreamy synth-pop of School of Seven Bells, and the indie-rock bands White Lies and White Rabbits. See him tonight at The Earl.

-Japanese Psychedelic band ( yes I really did just say that) Acid Mothers Temple are in Atlanta at the Drunken Unicorn tonight, for what I am sure will be interesting to say the least.

-Looking for som untapped talent? Head over to Eddie’s Attic, where you just might find the next star for Songwriter’s Open Mic Night. Trust me, it will be more satisfying than watching The Voice.

-Over at the ever-so-scary Masquerade, you can check out Fear Factory, Shadows Fall, the Browning, the Devastated, Legacy of Disorder. I am sure all of these bands will give you nightmares.

What’s Up Wednesday?

Happy Wednesday Atlanta! Today we are continuing the “Why I Love Leila” series…

-Leila has the BEST taste in music, and always supports local acts. She literally knows about bands before everyone else…..PERIOD. And the coolest part, is that Leila isn’t a snob about her musical choices, she just quietly shares and enjoys….

-The ever-so-popular scenester, Sharon Van Etten is back at The Earl tonight to grace us with her Lucinda Williams-ness.

-Who can turn down some good ole’ Bluegrass/Americana? Head over to Eddie’s Attic tonight to see The Rowan Cunningham Band, joining them is Atlanta favorite, Caroline Aiken.

-You know it’s a good time when The Melvins are in town! See them tonight at The Loft.

-Over at The Tabernacle joining indie-poppers, The Frey who will be joined by the lovely Jessie Baylin.

-If you haven’t jammed out to the tunes of Foxy Shazam, then head yourself immediately to the Masquerade.

What’s Up Monday?

What a beautiful day! According to the Weather channel, we are supposed to have ” Sunshine and clouds mixed. A stray afternoon thunderstorm is possible. High 81F. Winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph.” Sounds like the perfect Atlanta spring day to me! There are actually a ton of really cool events going on tonight, so make sure and check one out!

-London-based quartet The Boxer Rebellion have been touring around the nation, and are taking a pit stop tonight at Vinyl.

-LA based rockers, Hurt, are not shy about sharing their opinions. Catch their rants tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-DON’T FORGET EDDIE! Eddie Owen that is! Go say hello to that lovely man tonight for the weekly Songwriter’s Open Mic Night at Eddie’s Attic.

-Christian youth outreach ministry, Jesus Culture, will be raising the roof at The Tabernacle.

-Just to stay in the spirit of weird-named bands that the Masquerade no doubt books, tonight’s lineup includes: Protest The Hero, Periphery, Jeff Loomis Band, The Safety Fire, Today I Caught The Plague.

What’s Up Tuesday?

Happy Tuesday Atlanta! There is a bunch of great shows tonight, hope you get to catch one!

-The Kings of California’s sock-wearers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, are in Gwinnett tonight at the Arena.

-Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever “girl group” fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as “Young Oldies,” a mixture of 50s teenage rock ‘n’ roll, 60s girl groups and bubblegum pop. See them tonight at The Earl.

-Atlanta’s own, The Well Reds, are at Eddie’s Attic tonight, joining them are Emily Hearne & Neulore.

-Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist, Tim Fite, is the definition of a Renaissance man, having created music in almost every genre. Join him for a unique musical experience tonight at The Goat Farm.

-Electro-princess Frankie  Rose brings her synth heavy sounds to the 529 tonight. Dive opens the show.

-Why is it that all bands with really odd names always tend to play at the Masquerade? Tonight’s agenda: Fair to Midland, Dead Letter Circus, and Lionize.

What’s Up Monday?

Happy Monday Morning Atlanta! I hope you had a weekend filled with good food, families, and treats! It’s a pretty quiet Monday, but here are some choices if you feel like getting out of the house.

-It’s a double whammy at Smith’s Olde Bar, where you can see Dale Watson doing his “Monday Thang” upstairs, and downstairs in the Atlanta Room, make sure and see Copacetic, A Fragile Tomorrow, and The Tarlatans!

Check out Turias, Alestorm, Ex Deo, Arkona, and Huntres tonight at The Masquerade.

-Eddie’s Attic is doing there “thang” too! Join them for the weekly Songwriter’s Open Mic Night.

-Up for a little Queen singalong? I wouldn’t mind hitting up the gentlemen over at the Ten High for Metalsome Monday.

Happy Monday everyone! Looks like we just might be heading out of winter and back into the warmth of spring! Thanks to all who came out to Oysterfest this weekend, it was a huge success! Here is what’s going on tonight, hope you can make it out to one of these awesome shows!

-The Earl will be kicking it old school today, where 90′s rockers, The Lemonheads will be doing a rare performance of “It’s A Shame About Ray.”

-It’s a whole lotta surfer  punk going on at The Masquerade where  the venerable Agent Orange, Burns Like FIre, El Caminos, and Bullets are Good Food will be rocking it up.

-Tavern 99 is hosting a benefit concert for Karren Bhullar  featuring Ed Roland & the Sweet Tea Project. Gareth Asher & the Earthlings and other popular local musicians will also perform. Bhullar was diagnosed with stage 3B breast cancer at the age of 40. She is a mother of two and the girlfriend of Joshua Huff, the guitarist for Gareth Asher & the Earthlings. Her doctors told her that her only chance of survival was to undergo chemotherapy and a double mastectomy this month. The concert will help ease Bhullar’s financial burden.

-Go out and support your local musicians at Eddie’s Attic tonight for the weekly, Songwriter Open Mic Night.

-Free Show tonight at the 529, where we get some performances by Stallone, Wymyns Prysyn, and Nigredo.

What’s Up Thursday?

February 16, 2012 Atlanta Music News, Gigs No Comments

By Eileen Tilson

Happy Thursday Atlanta! The days consistently keep getting warmer, and I just can’t help but to think that this little hinting of what was supposed to be winter is about over. There are a lot of great shows happening this weekend, so be sure to clear your calendar. Here are your Thursday picks.

-Idle Warship is a perfect example of how a whole can become greater than the sum of its parts – and that is saying quite a lot given the musical components of this project. A collaboration between longtime friends and collaborators, hip-hop luminary Talib Kweli and critically acclaimed soulful singer and songwriter Res, Idle Warship will be entertaining at The Loft tonight.

-The Togas is Ty Segall, Philip Sambol of the Strange Boys, Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams and Lance Wille of the Reigning Sound. They were formed over the phone with the intention of providing the highest quality oceanic entertainment. The Togas will be debuting a covers set individually selected by Bruisers. Each Bruiser will be able to select one song, with the most requested and fun selections to be performed on the ship for all you harpoons and moby dicks. See them tonight at The Earl.

-Exposed Music Festival Presents: The Stand and Deliver Records Wintour 2012. Featuring Society’s Plague with Skinkage tonight at Vinyl.

-Caroline Aiken is a cornerstone of the Decatur folk music movement. Georgia Music Magazine once noted, “She has a soothing, fine wood-grain voice that purrs with a youthful innocence one minute and then growls like a wise bluesy singer the next.” See her perform tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

-Although getting plenty of rightful comparisons to the Kings of Leon, MONA is deservedly worth seeing for the salty performances. See them live tonight at the Masquerade.

It must be because of the fact that I was just on the other side of the coast less than 24 hours ago,but man this week feels like it is flying by! There are a ton of really interesting events to go to tonight, so just do yourself a favor and check out one of these awesome shows!

-This line between genius and insanity? Perhaps! Emelie Autumn has traveled the world as an accomplished violist, and also spent some time in an insane asylum. See what that combination produced tonight at The Loft.

-Texas post- rockers This Will Destroy You will be bringing their effects-laden guitars to The Earl tonight, check them out.

-The name Scott Kelly might sound a little familiar to you. He is in metal monster band Neurosis. He is joining Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), locals From Exile, and Nate Hall (U.S. Christmas) at the 529 tonight.

-Nothing I like more than to give some Atlanta rockers some love! Wednesday if not Before are a bunch of multi-instrumentalists came together in the spring of ’06, after some individual successes around the southeastern music scene. See them tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-Fishbone, whose cult like following has amassed numerous followers will be joined by the Supervillians tonight at the Masquerade.

What’s Up Tuesday?

Happy Valentines Day you little music lovers! Regardless of whether you are a single or a double, at least this day gives you a great reason to eat candy without a fuss. Although most people might be having some swanky dinner at an overpriced restaurants, the rest of you renegades should go catch a live show…Here are my suggestions.

-I was just saying that I pretty much like everything that Nashville based label, Thirty Tigers, puts out. Thus when I heard that they decided to release the new album by Adam Arcuragi, I got a little excited. A natural Georgia boy, The Washington Post said of the bands live dates “If you want to see Troubadouring done right, its your duty to catch Arcuragi.” Go see them live tonight at The Earl.

-Nashville’s, Drew and Ellie Holcomb, are the husband and wife rock team who are members of the band, Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors are touring in support of their newest release, Chasing Someday. Check them out at the famous Eddie’s Attic.

-Here is your only warning: THE ROYAL BATHS ARE PLAYING A FREE SHOW AT THE 529!!! Ok, I’ll stop shouting. This band is awesome, and this year will be enormous for them. Go see them for free before you start lining up to see them.

-If you were an Atlanta musician during the 90′s and early 2000′s then you must have been influenced by bluesman Sean Costello. He has literally inspired musicians all across our state. Tonight at the DBA Barbecue, they are hosting a “Dine out for the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research.” This is a special cause, go be part of something great.

-Nothing says love like The Masquerade!! If you are just super hating all the squirmy couples out playing mushy face right now, then go check out teen screamo band, That’s Outrageous!, who will definitely be the most anti-valentine’s day event that you could be a part of.

What’s Up Wednesday?

So that was January? I don’t mean to sound like a complainer, but where was all the snow?? The beginning of Feb. though is feeling just fine, it’s like having a sense of renewal. So start this month out right and check out one of these bad ass shows.

-You might remember her as the rebel rocking chick in Dead Weather and he is the new Mr. Kate Moss, but together they form The Kills, which if you have never seen will blow your mind. My other new favorite band, JEFF the Brotherhood are opening, and you definitely should not miss them tonight at The Masquerade.

-Bernadette Seacrest and her Provocateurs – with guitarist/songwriter par excellence, Charles Williams and bad-ass bassist Kris Dale will be rocking it out at The Earl tonight.

-A songwriter’s in the roundish style party is going down tonight at Eddie’s Attic, where Erick Baker & Mieka Pauley, with special guest, Meghan Arias will be entertaining the masses.

-Genre blending Colorado newcomer, Ronlit will be bringing in his sense of style tonight at The Five Spot with AV8R.

- And although this may not be a concert, the winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, Red,  will be at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s Pontifical, obsessive, vain, arrogant and brilliant, modernist painter Mark Rothko turned the art world on its head with his revolutionary abstract expressionist studies in color, shape and texture. John Logan’s Redarrives in Atlanta to paint a raw and provocative portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability in this electrifying play.
