Live Review: I.O.Z at Smith’s Olde Bar, July 4

By Ellen Eldridge

Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta hosted its Independence Day celebration with $1 hot dogs, fresh off the grill, on the back patio in view of nearby fireworks demonstrations and, upstairs, a show by local band I.O.Z. As the opening act for Col. Bruce Hampton, listed as a “Phish After-Party,” one might expect I.O.Z to be a run-of-the-mill experimental jam band. Certainly, aspects of this eight-member band include a second percussionist and a mac-wielding lead guitarist, which lend themselves to an experimental feel, but I.O.Z was a pleasant surprise brimming with talented musicians who made for a fun evening among friends. Not only is the music truly enjoyable to listen and dance to, but it resonates with music professionals as praise worthy. From the bassist, Jonathan Lee, and dual drummers, Greg Perry on drumset and Jeffery Hunt on percussion, congas and even a washboard, to the delightful horn section complete with Jon Marett on tenor sax, Brad Belvin on baritone sax and Jack Rogers I.O.Z completes a talented band. … Continue Reading

CD Review: Back Row Baptists — Broken Hearts & Bad Decisions; Playing Smith’s Olde Bar, July 3
Broken Hearts & Bad Decisions

By Al Kaufman

As the name implies, The Back Row Baptists are a group that carry a Bible in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. They want to be good but, well, there are just so many fun evil things tempting them. … Continue Reading

AMG’s 4th of July Weekend Preview!

June 21, 2010 Gigs, Videos No Comments

Save on bug-spray this year and let someone else handle the grill. Atlanta knows how to throw down for America – here are a couple suggestions on how and where to celebrate our nation’s independence.

Saturday, July 3  – Blair Crimmins and the Hookers at the EARL
Not only will a Blair Crimmins and the Hookers show make you feel like you’re spending the 4th of July in New Orleans, it’ll make you feel like you’re in a swinging 1940′s New Orleans dive bar. Atlanta’s A Fight to the Death and Lindsay Appel open. We recommend you hydrate and wear dancing shoes!

Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4 – Col. Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance at Smith’s Olde Bar
Georgia-based music legend Col. Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance are camping out for two nights at Smith’s Olde Bar this 4th of July weekend. Blues rock meets outerspace jam session is what’ll be going on. This is definitely the party for anyone lookin’ to get down and let loose!

Sunday, July 4 Whiskey Blue Rooftop Party at Whiskey Blue, W Hotel Buckhead
Looking for a fancier way to spend the 4th of July? Whiskey Blue has exactly what you need. Check out the rooftop at the posh friendly Whiskey Blue inside the W Buckhead for a great view of the fireworks – and all night long drink and food specials! VIP reserved tables available.

Sunday, July 4 – Lightning Bolt at Eyedrum
Experimental noise rock duo Lightning Bolt prefer their “guerrilla gig” set up (on the floor in the middle of the audience) rather than the traditional stage show. Fans love feeling involved and the band is happy they can change it up and create a unique experience at their shows.

Sunday, July 4 – Red White and Blue with a View at the Sundial Restaurant, Westin Peachtree Plaza
Not really into the whole backyard grillin’ thing? Rather celebrate America from the comfort of a slowly spinning restaurant atop a hotel in downtown Atlanta? You’re in luck. The Sundial Restaurant hosts Red, White and Blue with a View! Possibly the best view in town, The Sundial will be catering all the traditional 4th of July foods – wings, mini-burgers, hot dogs, chips and dip galore! Families are welcome – discounted tickets for children 6-12, complimentary for kids under 5.

AMG Weekend Picks: Collective Efforts, Silversun Pickups, The Features, Frankie Valli Tribute and More!

Friday, June 18 – Collective Efforts and Vonnegutt at Smith’s Olde Bar
Old school ATL hip hop group Collective Efforts traded in the turntables for a full band and added just the right amount of funk and soul to their live performances. It’s possible the CE crew have finally found themselves after nearly a decade of making music and touring the country. Vonnegutt were so good at combining hip-hop and pop music that Outkast’s Big Boi signed the band to his Purple Ribbon Records. So whether you’re a fan of golden-era hip-hop or you prefer your rhymes be playful and sprinkled with poppy beats – this is the show for you!

Friday, June 18 – Jacuzzi Boys, Thomas Function, Young Antiques and Sodajerk at Star Bar
Lo-fi surf rock. Garage pop. Southern punk. That’s what’s going on at the Star Bar on this fine Friday evening. With a full bill including the Jacuzzi Boys, Thomas Function, Young Antiques and Sodajerk, we know it’s going to get hot and sweaty and after one too many PBRs we fully expect to see the entire venue dancing away another Atlanta summer night. TICKETS AT DOOR.

Friday, June 18 – The Wood Brothers at Variety Playhouse
The Wood Brothers are a bluesy rootsy soul-filled pair that combine their childhood influences with their once geographically separated lives. Originally from Colorado, Oliver Wood moved to hot and humid Georgia while his brother Chris Wood started a career in New York City with the well known trio Medeski, Martin & Wood. Reunited at last, The Wood Brothers are on tour this summer and lucky Atlanta get’s them tonight at the Variety Playhouse! GET TICKETS HERE.

Saturday, June 19 – Modern Skirts, The Features, Skybox at The EARL
Athens band Modern Skirts and Nashville band The Features might be some of the coolest indie rock bands in the Southeast. Both bands follow a genius formula – write good songs, play your heart out. The way they pack out venues is proof that what they do works. Catch them live at the EARL this Saturday, with Chicago band Skybox (who appear to also follow the good song idea).

Saturday, June 19 – Silversun Pickups at the Tabernacle
Silversun Pickups are playing the Tabernacle this Saturday. Please read that as the Tabernacle will be jam-packed with crazed Silversun Pickups fans. Bringing cool to the mainstream one song at a time, the band’s 2009 release Swoon brought them to a whole new level of huge. Check them out if you’re into rocking out on a Saturday night. GET TICKETS HERE.

Saturday, June 19 – Oh What A Night! A Tribute to the Music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – Frederick James Brown Jr. Amphitheater
Make your way to Peachtree City this weekend for a Father’s Day special – Oh What A Night! A Tribute to the Music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Classic hits such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” will have your pops up out of his seat dancing in the isle. And the Fred has a special deal right now giving $20 off of a purchase of four tickets. A great night for the entire family to celebrate Father’s Day and honor the amazing music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons at the Fred!

Collective Efforts and Vonnegutt at Smith’s Olde Bar – June 18

Atlanta hip hop crew Collective Efforts aren’t about the bling or the thug life. But if you’ve lived in Atlanta in the past decade you’d know that. Influenced by golden-era hip-hop, funk, 70′s soul, rock and every day life - Collective Efforts have been releasing records independently and performing live all while staying true to their style and avoiding the hip-hop clichés and prison (T.I. and Lil’ Wayne, if you’re reading this – take notes).

Originally three MCs and a DJ, Collective Efforts have since evolved into an even bigger collective. Now with a full backing band (think The Roots), the music and live show have turned into something completely new, all while keeping that Collective Efforts charm, of course.

Catch Collective Efforts live this weekend – they’ll be performing with up-and-coming act Vonnegutt (who make a nice little cameo in Big Boi’s new video) at Smith’s Olde Bar on Friday, June 18.

Live Review: Blue Rodeo at Smith’s Olde Bar, June 8

By Scott Roberts; photos by Sue Volkert

Like an unexpected visit from a reliable, old friend who you only get to see once every few years, a Blue Rodeo performance is like a warm embrace that fills your heart with happiness and makes you feel as if all is right, at least temporarily, with the world.  The Canadian veterans — the core of the band has been together more than 25 years and their latest CD, 2009’s The Things We Left Behind, is their ninth studio album — made the packed confines of Smith’s seem like a comfortable living room with their hummable country-rock and quietly confident stage presence. … Continue Reading

AMG Weekend Picks: Yelawolf, ARTLANTIS, Psychobilly Freakout and More!

Friday, June 4 – Yelawolf and Hollyweerd at Smith’s Olde Bar
Yelawolf has got to be in a good mood these days. Last week the Alabama-based rapper opened for Big Boi at a secret free show at the Yaarab Shriner Temple. Pretty sure it doesn’t get any cooler than that. Tonight Yelawolf will be sharing the stage with ATL’s own Hollyweerd - who are also everywhere these days. We recommend you attend this event, you know, if you like a good time.

Friday, June 4 – The Coathangers, HotChaCha, Cars Can Be Blue, Pizza Party at 529
Atlanta’s punk rock darlings the Coathangers would probably snarl at us for calling them darlings. Ladies, we mean it in the most bad-ass way possible. Seriously. Last time we caught the Coats they were rocking at Estoriafest with the Barreracudas and Gentlemen Jesse. Tonight they’ll be packing out 529 with equally amazing bands HotChaCha, Cars Can Be Blue and Pizza Party!

Saturday, June 5 – ARTLANTIS – Druid Hills Baptist Church
Here’s the deal – we love supporting local bands. LOVE. We have this blog here dedicated to music! We also love local artists! Atlanta is booming with great artists and art related events. One of these events happens to combine local art with local music! ARTLANTIS, hosted by the folks at Beep Beep Gallery is this Saturday at the Druid Hills Baptist Church on Ponce. Bands on the bill include Carnivores, Thy Mighty Contract, Abby Go Go, Mermaids, Buffalo Bangers and Lindsay Appel. The event will go on from 10 a.m. til 7  p.m. and get this – it’s FREE!

Saturday, June 5 – 3rd Annual Psychobilly Freakout Festival – Star Bar
Psychobilly fans unite! Star Bar is housing the 3rd Annual Psychobilly Freakout Festival this Saturday night! The Right Rev Andy hosts – bands performing the fest include The Hollowbody Hellraisers, King Daddy Polecats, The Atomic Rockets.

Q&A with Mishka; Playing Smith’s Olde Bar on May 28

May 17, 2010 Gigs, Interviews No Comments
Q&A with Mishka; Playing Smith’s Olde Bar on May 28

By Alec Wooden

Born in Bermuda and raised largely on his parents sailboat, reggae-folk rocker Mishka‘s music career began by chance when a record executive heard a rough demo in the mid ’90s and quickly signed him to UK label Creation Records for a relationship that lasted two records and garnered a substantial buzz within the UK. Over a decade later, life has come full circle — the hype is back, thanks in large part to iTunes dubbing him 2009′s “Best New Artist.” Mishka’s attitude on life and music hasn’t changed much, though his home in the latter has. Residing now on actor Matthew McConaughey’s J.K. Livin’ label (a relationship also fostered completely by chance), the ever laid-back Mishka has a new record (Talk About), the golden touch of producer Butch Walker (two tracks on Talk About) and the makings of a musical resurgence he doesn’t plan on wasting.

So you’re checking in from Hawaii, right?

Ya man. Moved out here about seven months ago I guess. I love it. I’m a wind surfer, ya know, so it’s great for me. I love being by the beach.

Talk a little about your musical upbringing.

My musical upbringing was a pretty broad landscape. I grew up listening to a lot folk music and 70′s reggae and some rock, classical, everything. My parents were really into listening to music. So I had a strong musical foundation as far as listening. There’s a lot of musicians in my family. My big sister plays guitar and sings. My father can play harmonica, my mother liked to sing. There’s a lot of music in my family. It’s just sort of natural thing that I was always around, ya know? It just sort of grew and grew as I grew up. I love it. It’s part of life.

What’s your general philosophy as an artist?

I’m about one love. That’s the inspiration in my music. I really just look forward to being out there onstage doing the music. That’s what it’s about. There’s so much inbetween – getting there to that place where you’re actually playing your music. There’s planes, trains and automobiles and hotels and all the time in between, so it’s always just nice to be playing and that’s what I look forward to the most.

How does that fit in with the J.K. Livin’ (“Just Keep Livin’”) label philosophy?

JK Livin’ is Matthew’s [McConaughey] label that originally started as a movie production company. He started to branch out because he really liked my music. It’s hard for me to say what the actual philosophy of the label is other than that’s just the reality of living – you just keep doing it. … Continue Reading
