What’s Up Monday?

March 26, 2012 Gigs No Comments

Sometimes it is a good thing just to have a relatively quiet evening. I’m pretty certain that if you spend too much time going to shows, you might forget about the really great ones. Tonight is a quiet eve in Atlanta, but alas here are your choices.

-Co-managed by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation imprint, Melanie Fiona’s original show at Vinyl sold out so fast that we moved it to The Loft. This soulstress, is certain to entertain.

-Support your local song crafters at Eddie’s Attic tonight for Songwriter’s Open Mic Night.

-Electronica fans will be at The Masquerade tonight for Borgore and Document One.

March 22, 2012 Gigs No Comments

We get the feeling that Atlanta’s in recovery mode this weekend after the madness of St. Patrick’s Day. But there are still a fair amount of gigs to get you back in the game, making things a little mad for those who want a repeat of last week. You can rock out, dance your ass off, and more all across the city. And don’t forget – Party in the Park tickets go on sale Saturday! … Continue Reading

5GB With Polica; Playing The Drunken Unicorn, March 20

March 19, 2012 5 Gig Bytes No Comments

Polica (pronounced po-lisa) began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs’ members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed into the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on “Lay Your Cards Out” and “Wandering Star,” the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy’s passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop. Channy joined us for our 5GB series before their show tomorrow night at The Drunken Unicorn.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

I saw Prince at the metrodome when I was 8.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

My favorite was in LA at the Bootleg theater a couple days ago.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

Amel Larieux & D’angelo, saw that over 12 years ago and it still sticks with me.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’d like to play in Japan  someday.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

I like playing shows with friends most of all but I’d also love to tour with a comedian or a dance company.

Catch Polica tomorrow night at The Drunken Unicorn.

Live Review: Grimes at The Drunken Unicorn, March 5

By David Courtright; photo by Michael Koenig (full gallery HERE)

Grimes is blowing up right now. The 23-year-old from Montreal by way of Vancouver (by way of the Mississippi River) is on the minds of every blogger and music critic worldwide, and her exuberant futuristic music is on repeat on college radio countrywide. It was no surprise that her merch table was barren – nothing but an apologetic friend saying, “Sorry, we’ve sold out of literally everything.” The disappointment was tactile. … Continue Reading

We’ve got a hell of a rocking weekend lined up – there are so many indie darlings, bands who have been blogged beyond belief, locals that are held tightly to our bosom, and a new British mainstay to boot, that you’ll have a tough time choosing. But not a tough time rocking out.  … Continue Reading

What’s Up Tuesday?

November 1, 2011 Atlanta Music News No Comments

By Eileen Tilson/ @tktalt_tn

Can you believe that it is the first day of November?? I can’t, especially when it is supposed to be almost 70 degrees today! Tuesdays are always a great time to start exploring your fine city, after resting on Monday, so here are some things to do as we jump into this month with a bang!

-For a show with some of most talented young ones (and some of the most good looking!) head over to Vinyl to see they incredibly awesome Voxhaul Broadcast who are playing with Ocean Grove & Robert Schwartzman.

-Old school Austin rockers, Scratch Acid are back together for their first tour in over a decade. Check them out tonight with the HAWKS at The Earl.

-According to their bio, The Chandler Travis Philharmonic is a 9-piece ensemble from Boston that includes a horn section, string bass, keyboard, mandocello, guitar, drums, accordion, and singing valet. It’s possible they might be the missing link between the Kinks and Sun Ra…see for yourself tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-Although I am not entirely sure what to make out of the boys in Koo Koo Kanga Roo, I know that is surely going to be a show that will at least have you dancing….even though it will be dancing to what appears to be children’s music! See for yourself at The Drunken Unicorn (appropriate much?)

5GB With The Drums; Playing The Drunken Unicorn, Tonight Oct. 31

October 31, 2011 5 Gig Bytes 1 Comment

By Eileen Tilson/ @tktalt_tn

I remember reading in some industry publications about two years ago about this very cool band called, The Drums, from Brooklyn. Now, before you stop reading this due to illegally tight jeans, check them out. This band is actually pretty rad. The Drums released their second album Portamento, on September 5th 2011,and also revealed that they almost split at the end of June due to stylistic disagreements. We chatted (briefly) with Jacob Graham before their show tonight at The Drunken Unicorn.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Joy Electric, Akron Ohio, 1997. a dat player and a juno 106.

What is the best gig you’ve ever been to?

Every time I see io echo.

What is the best gig you’ve ever played/performed at?

I don’t know. I’d like to think they keep getting better.

What gig would you most like to play? (festival or event or a location or a venue)

I don’t actually like playing “gigs”, but I am grateful for any.

What would the line-up be at your dream gig? Who would you play with?

I’d like to play a concert with The Wake.

The Drums play The Drunken Unicorn Monday, October 31.
