5GB With Tim Smith Of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds; Playing The Tabernacle, Friday April 6th

March 30, 2012 5 Gig Bytes 3 Comments

By Eileen Tilson

For a self-declared Anglophile, I was semi-shocked that I was not aware that one of Atlanta’s own played with Noel Gallagher’s (of Oasis) new act, High Flying Birds. Tim Smith has had quite the rockstar history, playing with The Producers and Jellyfish before jumping on with Sheryl Crow. Smith actually continued to play with Sheryl until lsat year when he got a phone call from a friend to come play on Noel’s new record. The recording obviously went great cause Gallagher asked Tim to join him on the road. Coming off of a massive world tour, Tim Smith joined us for our 5GB series before their Atlanta show next Friday at The Tabernacle.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

I saw KISS when I was around ten. It was the Love Gun Tour, and my parents took me. Going to see KISS at that time was like going to see a Superman movie.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

The most memorable gig I have ever played was back in 1999 when I played with Sheryl Crow Live in Central Park. She had all of these amazing musicians come out on stage and join her, so at any point during the night I would look over and I was be jamming out with Eric Clapton or Keith Richards. Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde came out and sang, and the park was just packed. It was pretty incredible.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

I remember seeing Supergrass back in the old Cotton Club days and that pretty much blew my mind. Hmm, some other really great ones though were Midnight Oil at Center Stage, and seeing David Bowie play at the Omni back in 1995.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’m pretty fortunate to have played a lot of amazing gigs, so right now for me it is more about the countries. I would love to play Russia & China. Also, playing Rocking Rio in Brazil would be pretty spectacular. We are playing Coachella this year with High Flying Birds, and I am really looking forward to that.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Hmm, I think I would rather put together a band with Keith Moon on drums, Colin Moulding on bass, and John Lennon singing. We would play somewhere small like the Beacon Theater in NYC. And we would be playing with David Bowie and his Spiders From Mars act.

Live Review and Picture Book: Justice at The Tabernacle, March 22

Review by Justin Lyons; photos by Matthew Smith (www.shadowboxerphoto.com)

A lot has changed in the electronic music world since French duo Justice broke on the scene with “D.A.N.C.E.” and Cross.  Dubstep has become the current rage, house elements have invaded pop music and electronic music as a whole has enjoyed a renaissance with more EDM festivals popping up every month.  Justice hasn’t ever really ascribed to any of those trends though.  While Cross was rooted in rock/house elements, Audio.Video.Disco took those overtones and pushed into arena rock territory.   … Continue Reading

You all know what day it is on Saturday. We don’t have to tell you. You’re getting your green eyeliner, green shoes, green hat, green cupcakes, green beer, green wig… you know what we’re getting at. Even if you’ve never danced a gig or taken a swig of Guinness, there’s a good chance you are getting ready to party with the best of them for St. Patrick’s Day. And if the thought of all that merriment makes your stomach turn before you’ve even had a sip of whiskey, then we have plenty of other non-Irish gigs to keep you going.

An Atlanta favorite, The Last Waltz Ensemble takes the entire catalog of Dylan and The Band and artfully plays them in a progressive way.

99X will be rocking out at RiRa with Francisco Vidal Band, The Geeks and Stereotype providing the entertainment while the pub serves up Irish food and Guinness to the masses.

The Buddy O’Reilly Band takes on Eddie’s Attic for a right knees up twice on St. Patrick’s Day, with a terrific noise created by uileann pipes, wooden flutes, fiddles, banjos, bones and more.

What’s Up Tuesday?

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner, and you know like me, that Atlanta likes to do up the drinking holiday in style! There are some pretty great shows happening tonight, do you yourself a favor and check one out.

-An official “Queen of Leon” the wife of KoL drummer Nathan Followill, Jessie Baylin takes her smoky cigar bar music to Smith’s Olde Bar tonight.

-NYC indie-poppers, Cults, have proved that they are not just hipster band of the moment. They are playing tonight to a packed house at The Earl.

-It’s just a continuous night of SOLD OUT shows. Hip-Hop’s 2 Chainz & Friends sold out Center Stage tonight for what will certainly be a party.
