What’s Up Wednesday?

July 27, 2011 Gigs No Comments

If you live in the City of Atlanta and love music, you have absolutely NO reason not to be at one of the amazing shows going on tonight!

-It will be a night of whiskey-fueled debauchery at Aaron’s Lakewood Amphitheater tonight, as the Kings of Leon rock it out with the Band of Horses. And seeing as how they just finished touring together, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple of members of the Zac Brown Band there as well… hell, I’d be willing to bet they jump on stage!

-There is a huge neo-retro music scene happening, but head over to Chastain Ampitheater for the originals. The Temptations and The Four Tops will be doo-whopping it into the early morn.

-Smith’s Olde Bar is going to set the stage for the start of the tour for new jam-band super-group, Trigger Hippy, which includes heavy hitters, Joan Osborne and Steve Gorman (Black Crowes). Make sure and check out the interview we did a couple of days ago, where Steve talks of seeing Prince in robe, at 5 a.m.

-Always ones for  putting on great shows, The Masquerade has a multitude of entertainment tonight from progressive metal band Animals as Leaders, to Kings of Leon Jr.-esque The Weeks.

-Atlanta band Turf War will be filling the air in East Atlanta at The EARL, with their southern Springsteen-influenced punk. Their debut album is expected to drop this fall on Old Flame Records.

-And last but not least! If you are just feeling like doing something a little more mellow, join the Ticket Alternative crew for our Street Food Happy Hour, in the TA parking lot. There will be food and beer (provided by Wild Heaven), and there will be music from Dave Daniels and the PTA. Check out the Facebook Invite for more info.

True Colors Theatre Company Needs Your Help!

Atlanta’s own famous True Colors Theatre company, led by Tony-nominated director Kenny Leon, needs some assistance. Here’s a message the theater company is sending out:

True Colors has 9 days left!

If we can raise $50,000 from our patrons by June 30th, our board has committed to raise $100,000 to end our season DEBT FREE!

Please consider making a donation today if you have enjoyed our exceptional theatre in the past, so that True Colors can continue to bring Kenny Leon’s vision to Atlanta.

No amount is too small (or too big).

To make your donation, please contact True Colors at 404.588.0308 or Online HERE.

So far, the non-profit company has raised about $15,000, leaving about $35,000 to go. Our parent company, Ticket Alternative, who sells tickets for the theater’s plays, is waiving all fees that True Colors usually accrues, in order for every penny to help.

True Colors is a great local theater company that consistently puts out amazing plays with world-class talent. We hope you’ll help them out and aid in continuing a great Atlanta institution.

Atlanta Foursquare Day Returns on April 16 – with a Fancy Party at W Atlanta Downtown

April 6, 2011 Gigs, Giveaways, News No Comments

Last year Atlanta was treated to their first Foursquare Day, with lots of great deals and fun times galore. Now it’s back for a second year on Saturday, April 16, with deals from the likes of Rita’s (free Italian ice), Dancing Goats Coffee Bar (BOGO on all coffee/espresso drinks) and more (check out the full list and details HERE).

There will also be a sweet party going on at W Atlanta Downtown, at their very swanky rooftop bar. All you have to do to get in is check-in at the “2011 Atlanta Foursquare Day Party” venue when you get to the hotel, and you’ll be greeted with a special “Foursquare Cocktail.” And if you’re one of the first 100 in you get a fancy free T-shirt – and all party-goers get free Foursquare buttons, coozies and stickers. The W will  be bringing in the yummy bites, and there’s a cash bar with some great drink deals.

The event is also in aid of some wonderful local charities: Atlanta Community Food Bank and Atlanta Humane Society. So don’t forget to bring some non-perishable food items for the ACFB. And for the Atlanta Humane Society, when you check in you can make a pledge, which will be multiplied by the number of check-ins (capped at 250), giving you your final pledge amount. So, for example, if you make a pledge of 10 cents and the number of check-ins is 250, then you will pledge $25. Nice right? Get the full details on the party, as well as the after-party deals offered by the W, HERE.

There are some great sponsors of this event, including Sweetwater and Fifth Group, and our parent company Ticket Alternative is proud to be amongst them.

Download The EARL’s Venue App, Get a Free PBR!

We like the sound of this deal. And if you’re a fan of The EARL, local and/or good music and beer, then you will be excited too.

You might have heard by now that our parent company Ticket Alternative has launched their first iPhone app, a venue app for our beloved EARL. It’s a free app that lets you view and share events, buy tickets for shows and get info about the gigs and the venue. To make sure the rock ‘n’ rollers of Atlanta know about this fancy new tech marvel, The EARL and Ticket Alternative have teamed up with beloved boozers Pabst Blue Ribbon for a special promotions throughout the month of April. Each night, starting April 1, the first 12 customers who show The EARL app on their iPhone to the bartender at the back room of The EARL get’s a free 12 oz PBR. So that’s a free app, for a free beer. What could be better?

Check out what The EARL has coming up HERE and download the app HERE.

Fantasyland Records Moves to Pharr Road!

Local crate-diggers will be happy to hear that Fantasyland Records has found a new home! The used (and now new as well) record store has moved from its old address of 2839 Peachtree Road to their new spot 360 Pharr Road NE (Suite B). Fantasyland has recently got in some goodies from the likes of Dead Weather, Black Keys, and of course vintage gems that any collector would be happy to drool over.

And don’t forget – the store is also an outlet for Ticket Alternative! So go by and see the new location, buy a couple of records and a few tickets too!

Criminal Records Once Again A Ticket Alternative Outlet

Buying music from your locally-owned independent record store is awesome. So why not buy your concert tickets from them too? Little Five Points’ Criminal Records has rejoined the prestigious clan that includes Decatur CD, Fantasyland Records and lots of CD Warehouses, selling tickets for Ticket Alternative. There’s a $2 convenience fee at all outlets, and you can pick up some ace music while you’re at it.

OK Go’s “WTF” Video Remix Project Well Underway; Playing The Loft, May 13

March 29, 2010 Gigs, Videos No Comments

OK Go – WTF? from OK Go on Vimeo.

OK Go certainly know how to work that video camera. And they sure know how to get their fans’ attention. They launched a video remix project at the beginning of the year for their single “WTF,” which you may have started to hear on the ads for “Bones” and “Fringe.” It’s a lovely way to waste a couple of minutes at work – just watching the original trippy video or the rest of the crazy remixes – or indeed a lot longer if you’re willing to submit you’re own masterpiece. Be warned – there is (naturally) a couple of bad words at the beginning!

OK Go play The Loft May 13. Tickets are on sale now!

AMG SXSW ’10 Q & A with Favorite Gentlemen’s Jeremiah Edmond

March 16, 2010 Gigs, Interviews No Comments

Ticket Alternative is partnering with indie record label Favorite Gentlemen for a SXSW showcase at the Belmont in Austin, TX on Thursday, March 18. AMG sent Favorite Gentlemen president Jeremiah Edmond the SXSW ’10 Q & A. This is what he said.

You’re soon to be on the road to SXSW! According to Google maps, the trip from ATL to Austin = approx. 16 hours driving. What are your three essential road trip albums?

This year is different in that this is the first year I am attending only from the label side of things (Favorite Gentlemen) and not as an artist. That means I am not making my way out to Austin while already on tour OR making the long drive straight there and back.  That changes the choice of travel music for sure.

Past van ride staples -
  • Kings of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak
  • Jay-Z – Black Album
  • My Morning Jacket – Z
As I am flying this year the music selection isn’t as major a part of the experience because its ability to keep you away and alert/alive or to inspire interaction and entertainment for the whole band isn’t the main priority. My playlist for the plan ride will probably just consist of new music that I need to check out.
On the list-
